Potty Precautions

tracey by tracey Young Parent(July 2006) (rank 11th)

A blog post from Kilee got me thinking about my experience potty training my girls. Here's a little idea that might help with those unexpected (and inevitable) accidents. To protect your car seat put a plastic bag on the bottom of the seat and then place a thick cloth

nappie or hand towel folded in half on top of that. When you put your child in the seat on top of the make-shift barrier your the seat will be protected from any accidents. I know Kilee's huband wish she'd done that sooner! ; ) For the couch, I did something similar, without the plastic bag. I used a crib mattress pad (the unfitted kind) because they are usually made with enough padding (some are even plastic lined) to protect the couch.  And don't forget to keep extra crib sheets clean and easily accessibale for those middle of the night accidents. When you are half asleep and you have to change the crib, not having to dig around to find a sheet will be a really good thing! The same goes for extra jammies and blankets. ANd be sure your spouse/partner knows where that stuff is kept too so you can trade off with accient duty.

And as a side note- to keep little toes warm while sitting on the little potty, I keep a small carpet mat down in front of the potty (one with a rubber bottm to prevent slipping). That way when we'd put my daughter on the potty first thing in the morning when the tile is cold, it 's not a shock to her little feet.

That's brilliant.  I think he would like it if I got him a seat warmer as well.

Posh bub.  Do you know, I have never experienced a seat warmer yet.  Must say that E  was desperate the other day when we were at the local shops, so i asked if she could use their staff one, and the seat was plastic covered foam - so it was squishy.  She thought that was hilarious!

Cribs and accidents
I have already had to get a barrier pad down in the cot (crib) for my daughter - she has the delightful habit of taking of her nappy and peeing on the sheet (or worse) during afternoon naps. Potty training, and a bed, here we come...

idea for cribs
When making the crib up, place down matress pad (waterproof), sheet, the another waterproof pad and sheet.  This way, if your little one has an accident, all you have to do is pull off the top layer, rather then remaking the bed.  It just seems as though it would be a lot quicker for those middle-of-the-night, half asleep accidents.

idea for cribs
what a great idea!  The least amount of changing of sheets is always the best.

Cool
I wish I'd thought of this when Matthew was a newborn. With a newborn, you never know when they'll blow so our carseat has seen it's share of accidents.

Good idea

That sounds like a pretty good idea. I will have to keep that in mind for when my daughter gets old enough to be potty trained!

Thanks
