Ectopic Pregnancy

hermy by hermy Talking Back(July 2007) (rank 90th)

A good friend of mine just suffered an ectopic pregnancy only recently, this is my reason for writing this article.

An ectopic pregnancy happens when a fertilized egg implants itself somewhere other than in

the uterus. This can be life threatening, as the fertilized egg grows it may rupture the organ it has implanted itself. The most common part where the egg will implant itself are the fallopian tubes.

When an ectopic pregnancy happens you have very much the same signs as being pregnant, of course there are a few signs that will be different.

                 Signs and Symptoms;

n      Late period

n      Positive pregnancy test

n      Unusual bleeding

n      Fainting and/or dizziness

n      Pain in your lower abdomen

n      Bladder or bowel pain

n      Lower back pain

An ectopic pregnancy can not continue to full term because of the dangers it will put the woman in.

If an ectopic pregnancy is caught early, a drug called Methotrexate will be injected into the woman. This injection will dissolve the foetus, which will then be absorbed by the body. This procedure reduces the amount of scarring caused to your reproductive organs.

In more advanced cases surgery will be needed, sometimes requiring the removal of the affected fallopian tube.

Knowing the signs of an ectopic pregnancy is important the sooner it is treated the less the scarring that will be caused by the treatment, it may also save your life. If you think or know you are pregnant and are feeling any discomfort, pain or bleeding, make sure to see your doctor immediately.

My friend was lucky and her ectopic pregnancy was caught early so all she needed was the injection…..she is well and has recovered, she has now waited three months and they are trying again for a baby.

                           I hope this helps……………..

Re: Ectopic Pregnancy

I think it is the bleeding and the pain that are different.  Of course not all bleeding and pain will mean an ectopic pregnancy and I had two healthy babies - despite having some pain and bleeding, but I was checked out for an ectopic pregnancy and all was clear, thankfully.  Still it is better to go to the doctor and make sure.

Re: Ectopic Pregnancy

Great Advice,

May I add that another sign of ectopic pregnacy is what they call 'shoulder tip' pain.... pain that is located right at the tip of your shoulder...

I suffered an ectopic 2 years ago, which almost took my life, but lucky for me i was at the hospital and was preparing for surgery...

The day before i was to have surgery i was poked by many baffled Doctors as i had no signs of an ectopic. but the one question that was asked so many time was "did i have shoulder tip pain" because i didn't have any pain at all anywhere, the doctors were at a loss... The only thing they were relying on was my bloods... the bloods were indicating that i was pregnant and that the fetus was still growing (somewhere). I spent an hour and a half having an ultra sound but they still couldn't find anything....

So that when they decided on sending me into surgery for a look around.... but before i made it to surgery the nurses found me unconscious on the bathroom floor.... so with much blood loss and then a load of transfusions later.... i've recovered well....

Take care all...

Re: Ectopic Pregnancy
There have been reported cases where the feotus grows beside the uterus but out of the fallopian tube.  Saw it on one of those Medical shows where they share their stories.  Effectively she had triplets, but only one was outside the womb.  Scary isn't it.

Thanks for sharing.

Re: Ectopic Pregnancy
Great advice Sandra.  I know of a few people that have had ectopic pregnancies and have later gone to have more than one child.  It must be a very scary thing to go through.

Re: Ectopic Pregnancy

Hi,

I had an ectopic pregancy October 2005. I had the Methotrexate injection. I was upset as I really wanted a child and at the time I believed this was my last chance. I had a previous ectopic pregancy in 2001 and lost a tube as a result.

I was then later blessed with a beautiful baby boy November 2006.

Please have hope if you have had an ectopic pregancy, you still can have a baby.

Re: Ectopic Pregnancy

i had one around 10 years ago, which was misdiagnosed as a pelvic floor infection, i went to the doc because i had a shooting pain every time i sat down, i had had the depo provera injection only 1 month prior so there was no reason to think i was pregnant, 4 days later and 4 litres of blood i was rushed to surgery and lost one fallopian tube.

i was okay with it all as i didnt have any pregnancy plans at the time, and as a means of encouraging others i am still very fertile with only one tube and have gone onto have 3 more beautiful children, but as it is believed to be a genetic tube thing i am advised to have a blood test which shows if any pregnancy is eptoptic before it becomes dangerous.

all the best to your friend and anyone else who experiences this very painful condition!

Re: Ectopic Pregnancy

Excellent advice.  My girlfriend has just gone through this as well.  She suffers from endometriosis and has terrible scarring on her fallopian tubes.  She had surgery to clean out the tubes in the hopes of getting pregnant and one had to be completely removed because it was too scarred.  She ended up pregnant with an ectopic and ended up having her other remaining fallopian tube removed.  Terrible but she caught it before it ruptured which was good.  Thanks for sharing.

Angela

Re: Ectopic Pregnancy
poor thing she must be pretty upset.....my friend was lucky and only needed the injection so no scaring at all......it's not a pleasant thing to have to go through......i suppose the good thing is that they caught it before it raptured which could have saved her life.....my thoughts are with her.....regards Sandra xxx
