Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

hermy by hermy Talking Back(July 2007) (rank 61st)

                                Mild cramps or a slight twinge in the lower back are considered the normal affects of menstruation. Some women can suffer severe discomfort and can even be disabilitated during this stage.

              PMS can have many symptoms, the main ones are;

n      Bloating

n      Irritability

n      Tender breast

n      Headaches

n      Constipation

                              These are caused by hormonal changes. These symptoms can at times cause social problems.

                              Food can not prevent PMS, but certain substances in food may relieve the symptoms. A low glycaemia diet may help because it raises the blood sugar levels slowly, which helps control appetite and cravings. Getting more calcium, may help with moods, cramping and bloating. Some women may actually be low on magnesium; this may cause headaches and depression. Vitamin B6 helps in the production of serotonin which will help with these symptoms, but caution needs to be taken when taking vitamin B6, do not consume more than 50 mg, excess can cause nerve damage.

                            Many women will crave sweets during this time, eating large amounts of sugary foods will worsen the cravings, by disrupting normal sugar levels, therefore making you want more. Women who exercise more are less likely to suffer PMS.

               Things that may help with cramping are;

n      Evening primrose oil

n      Herbal teas

n      Chamomile tea

n      Relax in a warm bath

n      Lay down with a heating pad over your abdomen

n      Take an anti-inflammatory

                           In some cases, painful periods can be related to other conditions, such as fibroid tumours or endometriosis. If the pain is persistent contact your Doctor who will refer you to a gynaecologist.

                          I hope this helps…………..

Re: Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
Good to get this out there as us girls sometimes just put up with the symptoms!  Like me until i discovered Mag Phos for the cramps.....shame it took twenty years!  After the birth of Tahnae (2nd) i had these horrible ANGRY feelings a day or so before my period...never felt so intense before.  Anyway got on to Vitex or Chaste Berry, worked really well for me, a friend told me helped her pain as well.  There are so many options out there not just pain killers.   Now all i need is something for the zits.....maybe menopause, lol!!!  Jx

Re: Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

Hiya

Great article Hermy. I dont get pms as such, actually, when flo's in town, my hair never looks better! (cos thats what really matters of course lol)

I have the middle of the month pain where i am practically climbing the walls so I have medication but it knocks me out. I have been told I have 3 choices..put up with it, have an abblasion(not sure how to spell it) or opt for a hystorectomy. So far i am the only female in the family with my bits on board so it looks like its enevitable and lets face it, im not particulary that attached to my uterus so i have no problems giving it up. The only thing holding me back is the annasthetic, scares me! So i will just wait i guess until the gyno says its time..

Re: Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
I find that a good calcium magnesium supplement is very helpful with cramps - if you remember to take them...  I definitely have those mood swings, and for some reason Stephen seems to forget and see the most antagonistic things on that one day of the month when I have NO sense of humour at all.

I get cramps in the middle of the month too mum2four - I hadn't heard of anyone else that did.  I mentioned it to one of my Doctors, and she said it was probably ovulation pain... Go figure?!

Re: Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
Hehehe - they just don't learn, and you know, I think that men ride their own monthly biCYCLE too.  It is obvious in some guys, especially if they are very extroverted.

I must say that I do get spoiled with lower back massages and extra cuddles at this time - I think we all deserve them too!

Re: Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
I have endo... and I do take a daily lot of vitamins for it, but for the last 3 to 4 months I have been getting shocking headaches and have been desperately trying to keep myself from depression, its silly with the amount of things I have been through with my body I should know by now what can help me.... but sometimes you just need someone to point it out......  And you have with this article especially with this bit   low on magnesium; this may cause headaches and depression.  I used to take magnesium.... so thank you thank you I hope this is the cause for my sudden downers xx

Re: Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
Great advice Sandra . . . .

Another thing worth mentioning is that people already suffering from a type of Depression may also suffer from a more severe type PMS, this is usually misdiagnosed by doctors (left untreated some women actually suicide out of hopelessness).  If a person with Depression finds that for two weeks out of every month they are more down than usual they should speak to their treating Dr as they may to to have their meds adjusted during this time.

I know this as I am one of these people and more two weeks every month I take an extra tablet that more me and my family has been an absolute life saver . . .

cheers Kellz
