how should i make up my babys bottle and how to store it,..

cazza by cazza Young Parent(July 2007) (rank 2nd)
How should I make up my baby's bottle and how to store it....

Before you prepare a feed, it's very important to clean work surfaces and wash your hands. As germs can reach the baby and make them sick....

Remember that you also need to sterilise bottles and teats before you use them.  A pot on the stove is good to use and prevents thrush in mouth as some solutions that is used in sterilised containers have being known to cause thrush....

To make up a feed using powdered infant formula, boil fresh tap water and leave it to cool for no more than half an hour. Follow the formula manufacturer's instructions about how to make it up. DO NOY MIX MORE THEN WHAT THE GUIDE SAYS....

Test the temperature of the formula milk on the inside of your wrist. If it feels too hot, put the cap over the teat and hold the bottle under cold running water, Or use a large jug of water and put it in the jug to cool.....

You should make up formula milk freshly for each feed and use it immediately. Don't store made-up formula. If you will need to feed your baby when you're out, boil some water, ou should make up formula milk freshly for each feed and use it immediately. Don't store made-up formula. If you will need to feed your baby when you're out, boil some water, put it in a vacuum flask and take it with you. Then you can use it to prepare a feed when you need it. Little storage containers are available at most chemists or supermarkets.. Also if you need to have pre prepared formula due to childcare policys or  there is no where to make a bottle, make sure there is a storage area for the bottles to be stored , or the milk  will go off. so for childcare reasons,. make sure the milk is put straight in the fridge, and if out have a bottle storage bag...

If there is any formula milk left after a feed, throw this away. As its not a good idea to reheat a bottle more then the recommondation...

some of this info i have got from a another source, but have edited and put my ideas as well...

Great advice Cazza! I know a lot of people that don't make an extra effort to make sure their hands & everything else are really clean before they prepare food for their bub & it makes me cringe!

Hi Cazza,

He he he  . . Good Advice . . . People also need to be very careful and follow the guide on the tin, DO NOT under or over make the formula. You can store formula but no more that three bottles at a time is recommended.

I have a special spot in my kitchen that is ONLY for bottle making and food prep for my bub and when not in use it is covered with glad wrap. I have to be extra careful as my bub is allergic to more food etc than she can eat, even her formula is prescription.

cheers Kellz

Re: how should i make up my babys bottle and how to store it,..
You can store the made-up formula because it's our policy that we don't make it up, it has to be made up by the parents and brought in and kept in the fridge.  Where does it say not to store it? I don't mean to challenge you, very good article, that part just got me that's all since we are not allowed to make it up and some babies are in daycare for 12 hour days from 6 weeks of age so they need a few bottles a day.  I'm just after information on this because I wouldn't like to be giving it to the babies at daycare if it's unsafe for consumption.  Thanks.

Re: how should i make up my babys bottle and how to store it,..
dont feel challenged at all and thats a great question. and i think that what i should have also said was not to have a bottle stored too long out of the fridge, or use a special bag that can have the bottles stored for a short while..

In your case yes thats all policy for childcarers. and  at  chloes childcare centre we do the same and all drinks  and food go straight to the fridge...

thank you for bringing this to my attention and i will go and edit that bit....

Re: how should i make up my babys bottle and how to store it,..
so many people dont realise that making a bottle everything needs to be so clean, and that you cant make the formular up and use it a few hours later.

thanks for the advice

Re: how should i make up my babys bottle and how to store it,..
Great advice Cazza - we found that on the odd occasion when we were stuck somewhere and had a clean bottle, but no cool boiled water, we bought a bottle of spring water instead.  We always had a few sachets of single serve formula with us.  I did breastfeed exclusively up until about 5 months when we were travelling, and we decided to start doing both for convenience - I didn't always want to whip out my boobs in sub zero temperatures on the mountainside for all and sundry to see.
