Using Fenugreek to increase breastmilk supply.

MumKim by MumKim Young Parent(July 2007) (rank 11th)
At the beginning of the month I wrote a blog called Don’t take two about my experience with using fenugreek to boost my milk supply. Since then I  received an email from one member who wished she had known about fenugreek earlier and a comment on the blog
from another member requesting that I write advice about Fenugreek.

Before writing advice on Fenugreek I decided to do a little research on possible side effects. First I checked with the friend who told me about Fenugreek. No her lactation consultant hadn’t mentioned any side effects when she recommended Fenugreek. Then I googled and came across a very interesting article on Herbs and breastfeeding. So I began to wonder if my daughter’s gastro (by 6:30 pm I had changed 10 dirty nappies and two wet ones – and this was day 10) was actually a reaction to the fenugreek I was taking. I stopped taking the tablets for a few days and her tummy at last appears to have settled, but then if it was gastro that could have run it’s course by now anyway. But  back to the subject…

Fenugreek is a herb sometimes taken by breastfeeding women to boost supply. It is available in capsule form in health-food shops. It can also be taken in as a tea, but is quite bitter. I bought Naturesown brand 1000mg tablets. The packet does not mention using it to boost milk supply. It says that it is used for

  • relieving irritation associated with mucus congestion
  • symptomatic relief of a sore throat
  • assisting to relieve mild upper respiratory  tract complaints.

The recommended dosage on the packet is 1 tablet 3 times a day. That is the same dosage as recommended in one of the articles I read about using it to boost milk supply. I would actually be hesitant in starting at that dosage. At the most I would start with one tablet twice a day. I really don’t recommend taking two tablets at one. For me that resulted in sore swollen boobs.

From what I read fenugreek can cause problems for people with diabetes and asthma so if you have either of those conditions you may like to talk to your doctor first. Also be aware that fenugreek is related to the peanut plant.

For more information on using Fenugreek to boost breast milk supply check out this article – all about Fenugreek. I also suggest reading this article on  herbs and breast feeding as it contains valuable information on possible side effects with fenugreek and other herbs. You may also like to check with your doctor or pharmacist to decide if fenugreek is the right thing for you.

I would love to hear of other womens experience with taking Fenugreek. It has helped me to keep breast feeding. I am not sure if it caused my daughters tummy upset. If I have supply problems again I will probably try it again and see if it causes any problems.

Re: Using Fenugreek to increase breastmilk supply.

Hi, I am using Fenugreek (9g per day - that's 9 capsules of the Nature's Own brand!), I also eat oatmeal every day and take Motilium (domperidone) twice daily. I still don't produce enough milk to exclusively breastfeed but I am able to produce some, so that I feed my daughter breast - bottle - breast. Maybe one meal per day is breastmilk only, and she feeds 2 - 3 hours later. She is 7 weeks old and I have been doing this since she was 10 days old, and I plan to continue at least until she starts eating solids at 6 months or so. I consulted my GP, a naturopath and a breastfeeding counsellor but it was my chiropractor who suggested the fenugreek.

I am also allergic to peanuts and I have asthma and I have suffered asthma every day as a side effect. I just use my puffers to relieve the wheezing.

*However - ! I would recommend fenugreek to anyone wanting to breastfeed more. The trick is to take enough until you smell like maple syrup. I knew when that was as I had a maple syrup taste in my mouth all day and my hands smell mapley. The sites mentioned in the article are great sources of information.

Re: Using Fenugreek to increase breastmilk supply.

i have not only used it to help supply but given it to many clients and have found it to be very effective.

the reason it works is because it is a mucliotic herb so it helps to increase mucous secretions, breast milk being one, its also a fantastic herb to use in cold or flu as it clears the congestion by thinning mucous and helping you to cough it up, that being said you will often notice your nose becomes more runny or you produce more phlegm, this is just your body trying to expell the congestion.

as with all herbs they are not for everyone but they are well worth trying, and in my experience when used correctly have great results and most important natural results

Re: Using Fenugreek to increase breastmilk supply.

Hey Kim,

I so so so wish I had had this information 18 months ago when I was having soooo much trouble with my supply I had to quit.  I paid a lactation consutant $90- and she never mentioned this little mirrical to me.  Just impossible positions and constantly pumping so that my bum made a permanant indent in the couch.  Oh little mirical herb, I will sing your praises to anyone who may require you.

Thanks Kim.  I can see I am going to be e-mailing your artical quite a bit.  Well researched as well.

P.S. poor little Natalya's tummy and little bum, what a yucky time of it she had 10 poo's in one day...... that must be a record.

Hey Chele
Make sure they read the other two articles I mentioned, especially the herbs and breastfeeding. Full of valuable information.
Actually Natalya managed 11 poos in total that day and two just wet nappies. Maybe the info will be helpful when you have a second bub.
cheers
Kim
