Surviving The Silly Season "CHRISTMAS"

janicepovey by janicepovey Minti Founder(July 2007) (rank 26th)

I'm sure they call it the silly season for a good reason. It is meant to be a time for "GOOD CHEER"  but for some families it can be a time of 'MENTAL & FINANCIAL STRAIN". I hope, i may help some families out there with my tips

of surviving Christmas.

I set aside $10 per week. At the start of every year the 1st of January,  I  have 4 jars.

1) For Meat  $2 per week, which gives me $104. Enough for a ham, or turkey  and some spare for everyday meat.

2) For Groceries $3 per week, which gives me $156, to spend on those extras, you seem to need over xmas.

3) For Presents $5 per week, which gives me $260, to help with the ever rising costs of presents.

4) This one can help in the overall of costs. It is not included in putting away $10 per week........ This jar i call my $2 jar, and between my husband & I,  everytime we have a $2 coin we put it in the jar. It is amazing how much it adds up......... Last year by december we had $560 put away. Which helped greatly, towards presents, food, drinks and extra's for when friends dropped around.

Even though we are on the down hill run to xmas ( 21 weeks to go, tomorrow) if you could manage to put away $10 per week, it would give you $210. That might not sound much, but  at that time of year i think every dollar $$$$$$ helps. Plus if you could put all your spare change into a jar, i think you would be amazed, at how it would help out.

Re: Surviving The Silly Season "CHRISTMAS"
wow i love this idea janice!
compared to the chrisco hampers .....because in those hampers alot of the stuff probably doesnt get used - just given away to relatives who will use it!
Also, i do the same as ngairi and buy presents earlier on in the yr and store them! I love to go to sales and pick up expensive items for only a few dollars!
But for the chrisco lovers..... it is a good idea..... especially if you have really young kids and dont have the time to shop hehe.
I will be starting this as of next week!
Cheers

This is fantastic. I start my Christmas shopping at the January sales. If I find something that is cheap, I will buy it and it goes in the pressie cupboard. Also, mum and dad decided a few years ago to give my husband and I for Christmas a hamper in a wahing basket. In there is all the everyday things we go through and things you might forget to buy, like toilet paper, washing powder, etc. When my sister came back from overseas, I got her to join in to it as well with a junk food one for the kids for the holidays.

Re: Surviving The Silly Season "CHRISTMAS"
That's a great idea!!! I am putting that much away a fortnight at the moment anyway - in an award saver account.  Unfortunately, I had to break into it around Easter but it really came in handy.  I am TRYING very hard to hold onto it until Christmas this time, or at least until my son's tenth birthday party.  And because it just comes out of my pay every fortnight automatically, I am so used to being without it now anyway, that I am hoping to continue with it as long as I can.

Great article.

Sometimes it is hard not to dip into the fund, the main thing is you are trying to save, it does help when Xmas comes around.

Re: Surviving The Silly Season "CHRISTMAS"
Hi
With 21 weeks to go forget about the money side and lets all go back to a home made xmas.
Why should we be spending hundreds of dollars on something that has become so commercialised
Look at where last years xmas presents are....Do you have any of them left
Do you even remember what you got for last xmas or the one before
Lets celebrate life not sadness this year
Go back to your roots and look for a idea that can save people spending money
Spread the good stuff not the expensive stuff
Make xmas happy not stressful
Luv Deb

That's a really good idea for planning the Christmas season. Or any other festive season that may occur that are important to other cultures where lots of people come together for food and other things.
