Pregnancy do's and don'ts

Anonymous Author (July 2007)

There are so many things a first time mum needs to know so I thought I would put a list of some of the dos and don'ts of preganacy, If you have any more please feel free to add to my list.

DO'S

1.Firstly, make an appointment with your doctor or midwife, antenatal care is very importnant for both bub and mum.

2. Ask your doctor about Rubella (German measles). If you haven't been immunised you should do this BEFORE conception, you can't be immunised once pregnant.

3. Ask about Folic Acid, taking Folic Acid or eating folate-enriched foods helps prevent against birth defects and things like spina bifida. Foods that are rich in folate are; strawberrys, oranges, dark green leafy veges, nuts, soya and linseed.

4. Eat right! Diets should be simple

  • fruit and vegetables, wholegrain breads and cereals
  • low fat dairy foods and lean meats
  • Lean meat, chicken and fish
  • Dried beans and lentils
  • Nuts and seeds
  • milk, cheese and yoghurt
  • Green leafy vegetables
  • There isn't a need to eat twice the amount of food early in the pregnancy, just eat things with a little more calcium, protien, iron and folate.

    5. Consult your doctor befor begining any exercise, You may need to modify your existing exercise program or choose a  new exercise program Suggestions for exercise during pregnancy include walking, swimming and supervised classes such as yoga or tai chi. Pelvic floor exercises are also important before, during and after pregnancy.

    DONT'S

    1. Smoke, drink or take any drugs. If you have a problem with any of these please seek help, from your doctor, midwife or family- even minti members may be able to help.

    2. Avoid foods such as, raw or slightl;y cooked eggs, sliced meats, raw fish, soft cheeses, pre-made salads or any foods that dont look right. It is very important to eat only freshly made foods. Make sure to wash or peel fruit and vege before eating also, to avoide any risk of food poisioning.

    3. Steer clear of stress if possible. A happy mum means a happy bub.

    4. Avoid X-RAYS

    5. Don't take medication with out checking with a doctor or parhmisist that it is ok to take while pregnant.

I am sure there are heaps more things pregnant mums need to know but I hope that these basic things help you enjoy your pregnancy and have a happy healthy lil bubba.

This is a great pregnancy check-list.  Unfortunately due to the nature of conception the stress-levels were about as high as they can get.  Also due to morning sickness from beginning to end, the diet just didn't happen.  Toast, soup, water, they were about what I could tolerate and even then I had to eat/drink, then would vomit within 10 minutes, then have more, vomit again, have some more and it usually stayed down a little longer the third time.  Hopefully if I have another baby the morning sickness (or stress) won't be so bad!  But fantastic advice, wonderful for anyone who is pregnant or trying to conceive to read.

    wow this is excellent advice!
Unfortunately with my first bub i didnt realise i was preggers til 4.5 months and so was eating all the wrong foods though to be honest i dont think it would have made a difference had i known as i was in a house with only junk!
I got some good cravings and some bad but i regret fulfilling the bad cravings, as this influences what a baby will eat at their later stage of life!
I will be sure to follow this if i have another baby!
    Cheers.
