Holidaying in Auckland NZ.... What to do in my town

natelz1 by natelz1 Talking Back(July 2007) (rank 88th)

I have been trying to write this advice for weeks now, looking up things to do, hope you all enjoy and if you ever come here, pop by and pay me a visit!

First and foremost we have Rainbows End. Its great fun for the kids, admittldy it

has nothing on disneyland Or dreamworld but its great! They have a cool minigolfing area, and lots of rides.

Visit One tree hill. Very popular tourist attraction, obviously one big hill with one tree. At least, there used to be a tree, til some dork decided to go up in the middle of the night and cut the tree down.

We have Mt Eden, which is a volcano, Growing up my brothers and sisters used to love racing to the bottom of the crater and back up. Couldnt see me doing it now tho lol.

We have our Museum, which kids love, its huge, and entertaining! It has NZ largest war memorial. They have seasons of themes, dinosaurs, machines, etc etc. They have a special area for littlies.

In the summer we have a fantastic season of Speedway! We love to go as often as we can! its exciting! and noisy! But its exhilerating!

Kelly Tarltons, is fantastic. Lots of fish, go underwater and see the sharks swimming over top! Watch massive stingrays get fed etc.

Fancy a hike?? Catch the ferry over to Rangitoto, which is Auckland's biggest Volcano.

Catch a ferry to Waiheke Island. Fantasic Beaches, friendly town, and lots of Winerys.

For the adults we have Spookers. scariest place around. I my self havent been there yet, but its great, scary and fun, They say that most people come away with wet pants!

Fancy a trip to the casino?? The casino is great fun! Right next to a buffet restaurant. They have the Orbit which sits at the top of the sky tower, and revolves aroiund the top!  They also have a huge sky tower in which you take a lift up, walk around, do some gift shopping, and walk on glass and see the ground below! Kids love it!

I hope you benefit from this if you want to come for a visit!

Great advice Nat!  Being from the MAINland, I was of course brought up to be a bit wary of you pig Islanders... The first time I flew in to Auckland from Sydney, I was so taken with what a beautiful city it is, and how you can see the east coast and the west coast when you fly in.  The view from one tree hill is awesome, and I'd go back again - even without the tree.  That spooky place sounds pretty choice too.  Do they still have the bungy jumps or whatever from sky tower, and are there tours to those extinct volcanoes - is it white island or something?

I come from New Zealand too and can add to this:

Skiing!! Not only at the moutains but in Silverdale (about 45 mins north of Auckland city) there is an indoor ski slope.

Beaches - Auckland has lots of beautiful beaches.

Devonport - the quaint little seaside town - jump on a devonport ferry (the wharf is beside Aucklands viaduct) and go for the day.  Lots of lovely cafes, art galleries, beaches, nice park and some of the prettiest old villas in Auckland.

I didn't realise how lovely New Zealand was until I moved overseas - everyone keeps telling me they want to live there!  Its a sleepy place (shops are mostly closed on Sundays!) but definately worth the visit.  Great place for children to grow up too.

You go girl, I grew up in Central Otago, and it fully rocks.  I am keen to get back that way, it is a wonderful place for a child to grow up.  I checked the ODT online, there are heaps of jobs, and I am sure that there would be heaps in Canterbury too.  Best of luck with it!
