Food safety with Lunchboxes............

cazza by cazza Young Parent(July 2007) (rank 2nd)
Now im writing this as today i was at my childrens school and witnessed the state of some lunch boxes and what was in them, and even that we are in the cooler months we still need to be consious of food poisoning.... So below im going to share some tips and ideas that i have learnt over the years in various activities and speakers that have attended the mums groups that i go too ...........

Preparing lunches at home.

Always make sure the lunch boxes are washed in hot soapy water.............
Prepare lunches on a clean surface...
Dont mix preparations on the same cutting board.
Seal Lunch boxes well and Refrigate where no other food can drip on it.........

Always make sure that there lunches are properly stored in their lunch boxes as cross contamination is so bad...........

If you can think of any other ideas please feel free to add them...........

Re: Food safety with Lunchboxes............

Also not a good idea to give last night's left-overs to a child for lunch the next day.  Not only is it not able to be heated up therefore not going to taste as good, but it's also not good for a meat and veg to be left in a school bag then consumed hours later.  I've seen this happen before! I've even seen a child whose mother turned up to daycare at 4:30pm, the child pulled the container out of her bag and it was room temp, and the mother took it from to heat up for the child to eat! Eew! I stopped her and offered a tin of baked beans.  At first the mother said she does it all the time, she leaves it in her bag until she gets home (which is usually after 6 as she is not normally picked up from daycare before 6) and when they get home she has it for dinner! It's been at room temp from 8 that morning! When I explained about food poisoning, the mother put it in the bin and accepted the tin of baked beans

ewwwww no not good at all, and glad she accepted the baked beans..

I think that if you are going to serve your child left overs from the night before, make sure it has being stored properly....

Re: Food safety with Lunchboxes............
I use the tupperware lunch bag (cooler bag) with an ice brick in my youngests lunch box. I also never give him cold meat for lunch, as it sometimes not eaten until 1.00 pm and when I am making sandwiches at 6.00 am this is 7 hours in a lunch box, even with an ice brick. And if he leaves the lunch bag open, well..... Make sure that any cold stuff is packed closest to the ice brick. Also in summer I freeze the fruit poppers as an extra thing. Leisa

Re: Food safety with Lunchboxes............
hi there,

I also add a small ice brick to my daughter lunch box to keep her food fresh and crisp. . . I also use a child's trendy lunchbox esky instead of a regular lunch box as like you said one can never be too careful.

Cheers Kellz
