Girls Gone Wild: Young Women Celebrities as Role Models?

commonsensemedia by commonsensemedia Talking(July 2007) (rank 500+)

From the Editors of Common Sense Media

July 24, 2007

Role models, anyone? Lindsay Lohan was arrested for drugs and alcohol once again -- weeks after her release from rehab. Britney is still on the party circuit after her stint in rehab. Nicole

Richie awaits her DUI trial and we all know Paris has been in and out of jail lately. Our kids are growing up with these stars and celebutantes as role models. Their antics are strewn across magazines, blogs, and the evening news. But what kids may not know is that these media role models can have a profound effect on their own behavior and expectations. So what can parents say to kids who look up to them?

Check out our talking tips:

- Point out all of the places that kids see drinking -- ads, movies, TV shows, celebrity news. Tell them that these appearances are all designed to get them to drink.

- Let kids know what's at stake -- that the age many kids say they first try alcohol is 12.8 and that 47 percent of kids who start drinking before age 14 become alcoholics within 10 years.

- We already know how advertising impacts drinking among teens -- so why should we underestimate the influence of today's celebutantes? Talk to your kids about the influence of their peers and media personalities. Click here for tips on using media to teach teens.

Re: Girls Gone Wild: Young Women Celebrities as Role Models?

hey i know im going to ruffle feathers here but noone has said they are meant to be role models. they are human after all

the music industry and hollywood  and the acting world have always been more advanced into sexual encounters drugs and booze.

funny how when celebrities die everything is"accidental overdose"  when you go to different doctors for different amounts of medication  you certainly know the risks you are taking.

getting back to"role models" parents should be up there first with teachers  and the likes . peer pressure will always happen as well as celebrities when we were growing up i was a little girl there was "woodstock' musicians that believed in free love  drugs( heavy hullicinating drugs) i  at the  age of eight was sensible to know and make up my own mind what is right or wrong.

it is tough for parents but it is up to the parents to do "some parenting" i know a lot of parents do but you only have to see the attitude of some parents around and what they say that you know there children dont stand a chance if their "role model parents" are acting that way.

sorry but i think these celebrities have made up their mind to live that way they have that choice they are adults. it is up to us to guide our children and guidance they need

cheers annie

It is scary to see what is 'in' these days. On the shorts for Home and away there was a girl in a school uniform talking about moving in with her boyfriend. And this show is supposedly for kids?????????? What messages are they getting?

I agree with you about the role models.  Look at Brittney Spears too! She's not exactly the adult we thought she'd become when we first saw her on tv performing "One More Time"

I think there is only one young female celebrity who is a good role model these days - Hillary Duff.

I have to admit, I am a fan - not because she is all sort of wholesome, she is bright, funny, pretty and she seems to have some dignity - good call angie.

I think it is the adults who like these girls though, my niece and her friends are young teenagers, and they think these girls are (think of a word for promiscuous that starts with 's') and idiots.

Just to confirm, it's the BAD girls who are the idiots, not sweet good ol' Hilary Duff.
