False Strabismus

pfallerj by pfallerj Proud Parent(July 2006) (rank 1st)

Today's Tip - A flat or wide bridge of your baby's nose can make them look cross eyed when they aren't.

Most babies should be able to keep their eyes straight after three months of age. But if they still look crossed and your baby has a wide or flat bridge of their nose, they could be fine. The extra skin in between the eyes makes it look like the irises and pupils are closer together, but its only an optical illusion. It's still something you should ask about at your next well visit.

If it is strabismus, you'll probably get referred to an opthamologist. Eyepatches, glasses, eye drops or maybe surgery could be in your future.

Cross eyes
Most babies before the age of three months go cross eyed because they can't focus properly (So I was told by the doc) this usually corrects itself..  Usually... I remember my mum when she saw Francis go cross eyed.. She got a shock...  But as I had been told this might happen I was able to clam her down.. I think as Ally says if it does not correct itself after 6 months it may be an issue..

eyes
my daughter's eyes looked as though they were cross eyed, but they did fix themselves up at an early age, before 3 months old.

hmm
I think any concern a parent has should be directed at a dr as it my not be this syndrome that is affecting the child's eyes

Sounds good to me

My husband noticed that my daughters eye(left) was looking in towards her nose. So when I went to her 3 month check up, I told the doctor and she's like if it don't improve by her 6 month check up, then i will have to refer you to a specialist.

I just hope that its nothing and that everything is ok when we go to her next appointment..(Aug 30)

Sounds good.

One of my son's eyes appeared like it was turning in to the nurse practioner at the pediatrician's office so she said that on his next well visit, I should bring it up to the doctor. The doctor said that it seems to only look that way because of the extra skin around the inner corner and one way to tell at home is to check baby's pictures. The reflection (twinkle in the eye) of the light on the eyes should be in the same point on both eyes (when baby is looking straight right at the camera) which Matthew's were.
