Amniocentesis

hermy by hermy Talking Back(August 2007) (rank 43rd)

                           I was 38  when we decided to have Ryan and Ashlei, because of this I was advised to have an amniocentesis test.

                          I was firstly given an ultrasound to determine whether I was at high risk of abnormalities, this ultrasound is used to evaluate;

n      Foetal development

n      Foetal heart rate

n      Tone

n      Amniotic fluid volume

n      Foetal activity levels

                        If abnormalities are detected further tests in the form of blood test or amniocentesis are required. Even though my ultrasound came back at a low risk of abnormalities, my Doctor advised for me to have an amniocentesis because of my age.

                      An amniocentesis is performed between 15-18 weeks of pregnancy. This procedure is done with the assistance of an ultrasound; the Doctor will find a pocket of amniotic fluid making sure the baby will not be touched. A site will be marked on your tummy and a local anaesthetic will be injected. This will be done as a sterile procedure. With the help of the ultrasound, a thin hollow needle is inserted through the abdomen into the uterus. My Doctor then put a thin tubing through the needle so he could pull the needle out, leaving the tubing in he then removed a small amount of amniotic fluid. This will then be sent away for testing.

                    The test felt uncomfortable but it did not hurt. They say some women may experience cramping but I was lucky and never had any.

                    An amniocentesis test can pick up abnormalities, these are;

n      Down syndrome

n      Fragile X

n      Cystic fibrosis

n      Myotonic dystrophy

n      Mitochondrial disorders

n      Turner syndrome

n      Tay-sachs disease

n      Sickle cell disease or sickle cell anaemia

               Chemicals in the fluid can also be tested for neural tube defects, such as;

n      Spina bifida

n      Anencephaly

n      Conditions that affect a child’s metabolism

                  This procedure carries some risks; 1 in every 100 women will miscarry, if the Doctor loses sight of the needle there could be foetus or umbilical cord damage and there is also the risk of infection.

                 Make sure you take it nice and easy for a few days after the test. If you have any concerns contact your doctor immediately. The test results will take about 2-3 weeks to return.

                 I hope this helps………………

Re: Amniocentesis
i just recently had to have one.it was to diagonse what was wrong with our baby.it turnde out she had trisomy 13/patau syndrome.but i never thought i would have to have one being that i`m only 32 and the risks for for a lot of things are lower in those under the age of around 35 to 37 depending on which website you read from.now if we decide to have another child i will have to have amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling to make sure all is fine plus the 12 week scan  to try and catch anything as early as possible.because believe me i`m not going though this again.

Re: Amniocentesis
Yes,personal choice again but if it ever comes up with my DIL's I hope they will go ahead with it. The trend here in Canada is much older Mommies. Back in the day the norm was early 20's but now it's late 30's. Good advice cause first hand is so much better!

Re: Amniocentesis
yes Margir......the trend here is changing too.......on average i think women are opting to get a profession before children now days.......it's a good thing to be able to have the choice and to know......i think the decision is still very hard, but at least you have it.......thank you for your comment.....regards Sandra xxx

Re: Amniocentesis
Excellent advice.  not sure it's something I'd want done considering the risks.  But it's good to know what it can determine.

Re: Amniocentesis
the risks are scary , but when you have a genetic history or like myself was over 35 it's something that you seriously have to consider.........my thoughts were, i would rather have something happen then there be something wrong with my baby.........yet i have to admit that with Ashlei i did not find out that i was pregnant till 19 weeks.....by the time i had the test i was beyond 20 weeks and had already seen her and felt her.......it was a very scary wait for the result......i really don't know what i would have done if there was something wrong.......thanks for taking the time to read and comment on my article.......regards Sandra xxx
