Toilet Training

Toilet Training

This is just my personal experience with toilet training. It is no quick fix infact, it probably takes six to eight months minimum, but it is painless! It puts no pressure on the child or parent to be toilet trained by

a certain time, and there is minimal mess

It may sound a bit gross but my husband and I always kept the toilet door open from when both our kids could walk, with the potty just inside the door. Eventually they both started to sit down on the potty when we went to the toilet and before we knew it they were taking their own nappies off to sit down. Then eventually when they sat down they were actually relieving themselves. After a little while longer, they were going the toilet without us. My daughter was daytime toilet competent at 18 mnths and my son at 26 months. By 2 1/2 years my daugter was nightime competent and my son is not yet ready. He is 3 in september and we will wait until the weather is warmer. Children, I believe learn best from what they see..

By the way, we now shut the door when we need to use the toilet. (The loo is probably the only place where I can find some quite!)I don't think the kids have any recollection of how they were first introduced to the toilet.

Toilet Training
I trained my girl slowly and yes, I also show by example. My hubby doesn't....maybe that is why my son is unsure.

Toilet training by example
I have to admit (sorry for the image) but I am following similar advice and giving a vague commentary as well! My little girl is fascinated by the whole idea of toilets and the like, wants to operate the loo flush, says goodbye to things as they flush, and then we go off together to wash hands. She will take off her nappy for a 'wee- wee' and sit on the potty, but whether she actually performs is another matter. She still gives herself a round of applause, though! We operate a fairly stress-free policy of praising when she choses to sit on the potty, going wild if she produces, and just nudging her with the idea of a potty when we know she is due for a wee (bath time). We are going to up the ante next week and try switching to pants only during the day. Wish me luck...

Love it
I must say Codi is loving being able to give it a go. It's fun for him. It will be interesting to see if Codi gets on properly in a month, we'll see. Thanks for posting this advice. It helps to read everything on toilet training, but first hand experience (without too much pressure) is really helpful for me :)

stress less
I agree with this method.  Although Alyssa is still in nappies, she is just becoming interested in doing what us 'big' people do.  We do the same.  A subtle mention we are going to the toilet and let her follow if she wishes.  We did this with Luke, only after we began to lose our mind by trying to be persistent, and we found the stress less approach worked best.  Although other things work better for other children, definitely teaching by example is one of the best methods in this stage of our childrens' development that is proven to work best.
