Sense and Sensitivities In Children - add on

Sense and Sensitivities in Children - add on

Tonight on the news it was announced that studies into children who watched popular 'baby videos' performed poorly in speech and the ability to communicate compared to those who didn't watch them. I am constantly astounded when videos, decorative room ideas

and 'what baby wants' things are advertised as if they are the best thing ever for children. There is never any proof to back up these claims. It seems to be left to concerned people and child care workers ,people and more to disprove their effectiveness and in fact prove they are harmful. Sadly this happens 'after' some damage is done. Think like a computer - bad data in bad data out. Too much data for the system to work - crash goes the system. Our children need and deserve good quality comforting rooms and not  too much stimulus or electromagnetic energy being shot at them  . It is pretty easy to prove - use the testing method I outlined in Manners as New Age Tools for Power. If the child is too young to test - use the remote method. This is when the another adult touches the child shoulder and is arm tested as the child watches TV or reads a book . The adult acts like an arial - conducts the childs body answer. 'Reading and visuals from books connecting to speech grows the brains capacity' - Information from my training at 'The Institute for the Development of Human Potential.

Re: Sense and Sensitivities In Children - add on

Ok after reading the article and then the comments I have to say it sounds good but I have never seen a "baby video" I would not have my baby watching tv if at all possible anyway so for me that is not an option. I will say that I agree with some childrens shows being extremely helpful especially for kids like my zack who at one stage did not want me to sing with him or dance or anything at all but he would watch the wiggles and copy them. The Wiggles have been a great entertainment for my little man and Hi 5 was for my daughter B.

Re: Sense and Sensitivities In Children - add on

Hi Everone, thanks for the discussion - much appreciated.  This research was specifically about Baby Videos not High Five, Wiggles or the ones that are positive and engage children an a happy manner. It was the videos that were baby ones, speaking baby talk, not sentences etc. There were pictures of cartoon babies on the cover and the chhildren were left to sit in front of them for extended periods of time.. I agree with you guys the really engaging shows are fine but these baby ones were part of a scientific study. And Kellcazar my youngest son had speech problems too! This is never a balck and white with speech. We tried everything and then when he was finally seen by a psecialst - result! His tongue was too big - he had to grow into it. He delights now in touching hi nose and chin with his tongue :)  L&L Robyn

It might be true for some kids but my son (he has speech delay big time) was saying 80 words in november and we started watching ABC cartoons and he picks up at least 2 words every day he is now able to say around 1000.

Was it one of those current affair type shows?  If so, I find their research is usually not particularly valid, as they aren't usually what you would deem as valid scientific studies.  Did they specify which particular shows or why?  What controls did they have in place to base this research on?  Did you notice that they rarely set out to prove anything is beneficial in these shows anyway?

We watch animal shows, and sing and dance to things like Raggs Kids Club Band, and Bindi's Kids Fitness as well as nature shows.  The fact that we watch them together, makes them educational, and improves Jaydees speech, comprehension and physical skills, as we sing and dance and mimic everything we see.  He watches some kids shows while he has his brekkie if I am in a rush, he understands the basic stories, and says oh no, uh oh, yes yes, at the appropriate times without prompting.  I think, like all forms of media there is a time and a place for the appropriate programming, and as a parent, it is our decision as to what we think helps our child.

Actually I read about it in the newspaper yesterday as well, it was from a scientific study. I don't remember what else the article said though, other than it was bad and "more likely to turn your child into a Homer Simpson". Ok, that's really the bit I remember cos it was amusing. D'oh!

Re: Sense and Sensitivities In Children - add on
Hi,

I'm really not sure where i sit on this debate as my 8 yr-old has speech problems when she was 3 and we had no joy with a speech pathologist so I sat down and worked extra extra hard with my daughter myself. I also used Hi-5 DVDs  to help with sound and movement. With-in 4 months my daughter was talking, singing and dancing like she'd never had a problem and my GP wanted to know my secret.

I've since encouraged her to watch and use Hi-5 DVDs along with a series called "Land Before Time" as this series not only is an interesting story for kids but each movie has a hidden message for our children about 'friendship, honesty, body image etc'.

I think if used in the correct way and not abused DVDs and some Kids shows can be of benefit . . . .

Cheers Kellz
