toddler leashes/restraints/harnesses

sillyboho by sillyboho Speaking(July 2006) (rank 470th)
before i had kids i thought they were horrible. but when my son hit about 18 months old he became so hard for me to handle. i always carried him in a sling, and he NEVER rode in strollers. he hated them. so when he got mobile and wanted to walk,
it became difficult. he didn't like to hold hands, and if we could get him to hold hands he would suddenly jerk out of our grip and run away.

this particular one is a leash/harness combo with a backpack. i pack up special tiny toys or snacks in it. the leash is the "tail". we tell our son that we need to hold the tail so it doesn't drag and hurt the monkey.

it got even more useful when i became really hugely pregnant. now i can walk with him on the sidewalk near a busy street and not have a heart attack. he likes his backpack and rarely tries to pull away from me. we walk with the leash looped around my wrist and holding hands or with him holding onto my cart when i take laundry to the laundramat.

occasionally i'll get nasty comments from people along the lines of:
oh! that's NICE! is your kid a dog?
NICE PET!
that's demeaning!

but for every one of those i get at least 10 positive ones form parents, and questions about where i got it and does it work. i got mine at walmart, for $10. they also have them at target and online most places.

so to sum up, it works for me. if you have a bolter, try it!

*the pic is googled, not mine

Thank God there are some sensible people out there. I am so sick of the harness and reign police. They make me sick. Wonder what look they'd have on their face or what smarmy comment they would make when your child gets hit by a car or goes missing. Really - people just need to chill out a bit and realise that our number one responsibility is to keep our children safe. Man, you have to wear so much greif in this job, don't you??? But 'aint it grand! Harnesses should become legal requirement for all toddlers around main roads - just like seat belts and bike helmets. At least we'd all be in the same boat and not have to worry about silly comments from people who haven't reared a bolter!!! (And boy, are they FAST????!!!)

Gives your toddler more freedom to explore safely
Made exactly the same experience myself. My daughter is also a sling baby and still does not like her buggy too much. Now, her Highness just does not want to hold my hand when she is exploring the world. She is also tiny (about 70cm at 14 months) and started walking when she was 10 months old. Hence the leash has the further benefit for me that I can walk upright holding it rather than having to bend down to hold her hand. We are actually using a non-fluffy, purely practical version, and where the leash is attached at both sides of my daughter's torso - a bit more like reigns. This was quite useful especially when she had just started walking, since it also meant I could catch her much more efficiently with the reigns rather than when holding one of her hands when she fell over. She does not mind them at all at the moment, but in case she should when she gets a bit older, we are definitely going to try the trick with a fluffy animal - thanks for the tip with the tail!

A nicer kind of child harness with lead /leash
I met with two friends for coffee on the weekend on my friends son was wearing the monkey. I thought it was great. Jamie tells me she first bought her son the old type but he said 'woof'. Then she found the monkey back pack and he is happy to wear it. She gets lots of positive comments about it.
That afternoon I went to ToysRus and I bought 2 (at $30 Australian)
 - a doggie backpack/harness as a present for a friend (she loves it and so does her son) and a monkey one to go in  cupboard for when my baby is old enough to need it.
I was going to write about it in advice but then I used the 'find advice' bit and found that you had already done a terrific job of covering this topic.

i agree

I agree 100%.. I gave people werid looks when I saw them. But now that I'm a mom, its a very good idea.
It wasn't back packs that i seen though, it was just a normal harness.

i like it that it keeps your child close to you and not wandering away from you

I have to say, I used to totally judge moms who used them...........until I had my son. :P And, he likes wearing backpacks, actually, so I think the monkey one will actually be a little fun for him.

i've also seen a puppy, a bear, and a cat i think.

i tried using just aplain blue harness one a few times, and boo was not having ANY of that.

the key to this one is the cuteness.
