Preventing Injuries in the home in winter..edited...

cazza by cazza Young Parent(August 2007) (rank 10th)

Its Cold outside and you have all the children stuck indoors, Statistics show that most accidents occur in homes around winter, and there is ways to prevent little accidents happening..... Its quite scary as we cant watch our children 24 hours a day, but we can try and avoid acidents occurring.., so below here some suggestions to keep your child/baby safe this winter......

. Place a screen around the fireplace.woodheater,or other heaters, and make sure the child cant pull the guard doen on them selves, and warn them it will be hot if they touch... Make sure that matches and lightes are put up high out of wandering hands...

. Test the bath water- by placing your wrist down in the water, and that will help test the water, or better still but a theometer that shows you how hot the water is.... Never leave our baby or  young child unattended in the bath,,,, Have covers over the taps, and all poison stuff locked away...

.Turn Saucepan Handles towards the back of the stove, and if need be put a gate guard up at the kitchen door, and keep you little ones out of the kitchen...For the stove you can get guards for those as well....

.Never leave you hot drinks unattended, and if it needs to be left, make sure its up high...

.Keep electric Cords out of your childs reach. and have special power plugs in the power points...

And the most important one is make sure that you have smoke Detectors installed and the batteries are in and not flat....

Also make sure that your electric Blankets are not frailed, and in good condition..

Clean your flue and make sure that your air conditioner is clean from dust....

Hope you all have a safe and warm winter

xxx cazza

Thanks very important and another one from personal experience that just happened to us this week. Never leave deoderant cans or any type of aerosol can in the vacinity of the heater as they explode and take out windows of your house!

Re: Preventing Injuries in the home in winter..
Great advice you have there cazza!!!! Can I just add one more??????? Cords that hang down from blinds should be tied up out of children's reach. They can strangle themselves on them or try and choke another child with them. I had a friend of mine who's 3 year old nearly choked to death by doing this.

Another piece of great advice,

fi xoxo
