The first thing I do when I move into a new neighborhood is...
find out who the local children are. I spend time speaking with them myself and getting to know their personalities. I also tell them more about my family and get them to open up about theirs. Sometimes the children will be more forthcoming than the parents.
One thing that really meant a lot to my neighbors was...
letting them know that if my daughter is outside, I am watching. This way they know they could feel comfortable with their children playing in my yard. A few of the homes do not have good views from the front windows and the parents are insecure about the children playing out front. I let them know I am always there when my daughter is out. This also acts as a deterrent if any of them have bad intentions.
I knew I was part of my neighborhood community when...
we were invited to a holiday barbeque.
I stay connected and friendly with my neighbors by...
spending time in the yard, participating in homeowners' association meetings, greeting people on the way to the mail box.
My neighbors and I always try to...
look out for the children and pay attention to strangers. Several of us have caution signs to put in the road when there are children playing.
The best thing about the people I know in my neighborhood is...
They are willing to help each other out when needed.
Some other thoughts:
- Show respect for other peoples’ privacy and property.
- Find out what your neighbors do for a living and become their customers.
- Compliment people on their yards, homes, family, pets, anything you can think of. People have pride and tend to open up when they feel you have a genuine interest in their lives.
- Take care of your home, yard, pets and children. Be the kind of neighbor you would like to have.
