SLEEP SAFE... SIDS

Anonymous Author (August 2007)

Ok I'm going to keep this short its really simple I'm just sharing my view after a resent article about children dying due sudden infant death syndrom SID'S here's my way of ensuring my son is safe and well once he down for the night:-

If you live

in a very warm climate and need to leave the window open please ensure that any bugs are blocked you can get a netting so the air can circulate but anything else can't get through, ( this has happend in the past and you would never know lots of kids are allergic to wasp stings better to be safe ...)

I always use a room thermometer, I keep a refrence close by so I can check how much clothing he needs weather I need to add or remove bedding etc etc, bedding I don't like I feel much safer knowing he's in a sleep sac, but when really cold we have used a fleece that was before he learned to riggle this year I think we will be looking into buying all the sleep sac's diffrent tog's. As kids get older I also think there fun with so many designs and they'll never loose the covers shame they dont do one in my size ...lol

(If your not aware of dressing according to room temprature I've linked some earlier advice that may be useful)

NEVER ALLOW A CHILD TO OVER HEAT  DURING SLEEP

Toys in the cot are a no no my son loves his alfie bear but at night time we use a cot buddy, which I choose rather than a mobile.

Cot Buddy attatches to side of cot securley his has light on tummy and projects on to ceiling its also sound activated so if he wakes i the night it soon settles him again,

Mobile also attatches to the side of the cot but hangs over as your child gets older they will grab my son managed to get his down the sheep were attatched by a sort of string needless to say its not there now.

When putting my son down to sleep both at night and nap times I always place him on his back, make sure they are sleeping on a firm surface such as cot mattress and use fitted sheets.

Never allow smoking around your child and never near were they sleep.

Use monitors but dont rely on them alone they will not save your childs life althought will provide you with some reasurance i can hea my son breathng and he is never distresed as ai can get him as soon as he needs me, keep the sleep area of your baby seprate but still close so you have quick access.

My son has a dummy you sloud always give them a clean dummy/pasifier when putting to sleep.

The US department of health advices us to stay away from theses so called products that claim to reduce the risk of SIDS

It also states that although there is no exact reason why children pass in there sleep there is evidence to support the fact all these procautions could reduce the risk, and apparently falt head has been implicated so to avoid this try not to have your child in car seats bouces etc allow tummy time when ever you have time to .

I hope one day this will be solved and we will have answers to why so many little angels are taken but in the mean time please follow these tips, nothing is 100% but this is all we have for now, I hope it never happens to any of you and for those it has I'm truly so very sorry xx.

If there's anything I've missed plz comment and let me know I will amend any mistakes as soon as I am aware of them

Thanks for reading hope some one finds this useful

Hugs Jo xxx

Re: SLEEP SAFE... SIDS
Good advice - with my first son we lived in New zealand and it was colder so there was not so much risk of overheating. Now with Carden we live in the Middle East and the temperature through summer is very very hot. Luckily we have air conditioning but there are times like when walking to the car or shopping in markets etc that he gets too hot. I can hardly take him out of the house as I'm so worried he will overheat. I feel anxious if he falls asleep in the car as its not as cool in the back seat. I put cold bottles of water between his thighs to keep him cool in the car sometimes.

Re: SLEEP SAFE... SIDS

This is an great article. May be most of us know these advices but it's good that you refresh. My son is 5,5 yeras old know. But when I was pregnant I have read few SID'S stories and when I had my son it was my nightmare. When I was going to antenatel clas the midwife told us it might happen because of pee fume she said therefore we should use very clean mattress and cover the matress with a wool blanket. In New Zealand there is a wool blanket for babies I use that also. I hope no parents will experience this they solve this problem as fast as possible

Love

Seb

Re: SLEEP SAFE... SIDS

well done Jo and great advice,

thank you for sharing it with us as we all need to be aware of the risks, we have a few monitors for charlie, one that is attached to him when sleeping and monitors his breathing because of the sleep apnea, and a normal monitor in his room, and i don't think that you have left anything out, you have given us all some really good tips....

hugs and kisses

Re: SLEEP SAFE... SIDS
Well written, and everyone (in Australia) buy a red nose each year. I used to have quite a collection of them until my kids started playing with them and losing them all.

Re: SLEEP SAFE... SIDS

If your baby has wind try using infacol or gripe water either in bottles or given orally with medicen feeder some time's it also help's to put something under the mattress so there at more of a 45 degree angle, funy how kids tell you there own way more dangerous when there very young and cant lift ther weight.

Thanks for reading Jo xxx
