What My Baby Is Crying For?

Christine by Christine Crawling(March 2006) (rank 500+)
I haven’t written on baby’s cry over my blog Parenting Ideas yet, but I’d like to share some ideas with parents of newborns. The most useful communication method of newborns is crying. Ironically, new parents have a hard time to figure it out what their babies are
crying for. Is my child hungry? Wet? Cross? Or the worse case, ill? A baby’s cry might mean many different things, but to a new parent, it can sound the same.

Go back to my memory: when my first baby boy cried, I just used common sense and trial-and-error method to find out the cause:

Step 1. Check the feeding routine: is it time for feeding him? If not, then go to step 2.
Step 2. Check his diaper: is it wet or something? Still not, then go to step 3.
Step 3. Check his sleep schedule: is he sleepy or tired? (You know, newborns are always tired and need lots of sleep. So if he’s tired enough, he should be fallen asleep.) But if he’s crying and crying without any stop, then it worried me. Is he sick? Or something?

Sometimes parents can’t understand why their babies cry. Some hints from baby development expert Lise Eliot might help new parents:

A hungry cry is “rhythmic and repetitive”.
An angry cry is “loud and prolonged”.
A cry of pain is “sudden in onset, punctuated by breaks of breaks of breath holding”

These hints would give you an idea of how to figure out a baby's cry .  More importantly, don’t feel anxious and don't think that you should be able to interpret your baby’s cry. Over time, you’ll get to know your baby and can predict the cause as well.

Re: What My Baby Is Crying For?

Great tips, and it usually does come down to basics when babies are very young... The cries may differ from child to child, however a tuned in parent will very quickly understand which cry is which, and to determine if something else is wrong also.

Re: What My Baby Is Crying For?

Did anyone see the Oprah show with the woman who has deciphered what the cries mean? I bought her DVD the Dunstan Baby language and it actually worked for us. I had a terrible time with my first baby baby who cried all the time. This time I've been able to understand what his 5 differerent cries mean. I really can't recommend it enough.

Re: What My Baby Is Crying For?

Thanks for the advice. I still dont really know all of my baby's cry's. He is nearly 6 months old. The only 2 that i know for sure are tired and hungry. They are definately different. But as for everything else, it is really hit and hope.

Good advice but...

Hi great advice but it took me so long to figure out the different cries I had then developed other ways to handle the situations so I never really put this practice to use. I always wished I could tell the difference but it never really happened and we all survived alright so if any other mum cannot tell the difference, you are not alone and don't feel bad coz you will get to know your baby and use your instincts anyway.

But good work to all those that can tell the difference. I just musnt have the ear for different sounds.

Thanks for reading :)

Good advice but...
I found similar - I still cannot always tell her cries - esp if they are in her sleep.  But I work through the processes of possibilities and narrow them down.  I usually get it right within a few seconds even if it is not right first time....lol
Peace

Identifying what a babies cry means
I have four children and it is certainly very helpful to identify the different cries that babies have. It takes away a lot of worry when you think that it is a "tired" or "wet" cry rather than always being concerned that they may not be well.

Good advice
I like the structured approach to investigating reasons for a cry attack and can confirm that the sounds of crying can differ for differing needs - nice article Christine :)

Great advice
Thanks Christine - never realised you could recognise "types" of crying. Very useful.
