Depression & Medications

kharma99 by kharma99 Speaking(August 2007) (rank 500+)

After reading some articles on depression & people seeking medical help to either get counselling to talk to someone &/or needing medications to get them thru some tuff times, I have come across something (which is natural) which maybe something you have tried previous or may want to try first

before trying the medicated prescription drugs.  This form of medicine is available thru your health food shops in Australia but in the US/UK, its actually sold as a prescription drug.

SAM-e (pronounced "Sammy") is thought to be effective for depression and arthritis.  The interest in SAM-e as an antidepressant stems from the fact that it seems to have fewer side effects than some other antidepressants and works relatively quickly.  Despite being available in Europe for twenty years, it was only introduced to the US in February 1999.  SAM-e is sold as a prescription drug in Europe, however, in the US it is available over the counter.  It is sold here (in Australia) as a dietary supplement and as such is not regulated by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA).  Because it is not regulated, there are significant differences among the types of SAM-e on the market.

The American Medical Assoc has come out in favour of increased regulations for dietary supplements.  In one study of St John's wort, various brands were found to contain anywhere from 5% to 250% of the amount of active ingredient claims on the label.  Despite the fact that you can purchase SAM-e over-the-counter, professional help is highly recommended for (among other things) determining dosage levels, information on the types and forms of SAM-e and judging the severity of a depression.

PLEASE NOTE:   Some of this information has been copyright from the website if you do a google search on this particular produce name but I have posted it here on MINTI only as an "information" for anyone who is suffering from depression and is seeking alternative medicine which I have know this to be very helpful

Re: Depression & Medications
Having worked in the natural health industry, I would highly recommend that anyone interested seek advice from both a qualified naturopath and and their current medical practitioner, as this product has been known to help a lot of people.

A lot of this article is copied from another site however, and you do need to site your source, link to them and if you use over a certain amount (which I think you have), you should seek their permission.

Re: Depression & Medications
I'm with winnie on this one. Although this is naturally occuring in the body does not mean it can be used without side effects occuring. Caution is the key when looking at under going any kind of medical treatment for depression. There are other alternatives to medication such as C.B.T (Cognitive Behavioural (sorry bout the spelling lol) Therapy.

Re: Depression & Medications

Hi lonely28,

I have read your comments & do agree- caution, caution, caution!!  It was only intended as an alternative rather than prescription medication.  It was also only intended as an "information article" rather than "going out there to try it".  I also agree with seeking a health professional as I would do the same.

regards

Re: Depression & Medications
Caution, caution, caution. Sam-e although  naturally occuring in the body, s-adenosyl-L-methionine, is on prescription in Europe because if used orally or by injection, by people suffering depression,it can cause severe anxiety, and paranoia in people with bi-polar. My advice is never to take herbal supplements without it being prescribed by a trained practitioner. Sam-e can also cause, vomiting, wind, diarrhea, nausea and headaches, when taken as food supplement or for joint reiief. Caution, always.
