Keeping a check on baby's temperature

hrs2004 by hrs2004 Young Parent(July 2006) (rank 42nd)

With my daughter only a baby, I was given a tip to help me look out for when she might be getting a temperature, without needing to resort to proding and poking her with a thermometer. Whenever you change your baby's nappy, or whenever the urge takes you, give them

a light kiss on the forehead. The lips are an incredibly sensitive part of the body, and you can learn what an average temperature range should be. As soon as you baby slips outside of this, you will have a pretty good idea. Ok, then get the out the thermometer and check accurately, but as an early warning device, this can really help.

Re: Keeping a check on baby's temperature

Checking your baby's temperature by kissing its forehead isn't the safest way to do it. Maby it works when the baby gets older, but not if it is a month old baby. I think it is better to kiss its tummy, because the forehead may be warm/cold depending on the temperature in the room where the baby is. The tummy is covered with clothes so if the temperature is not the usual, then you may consider taking out the thermometer :)

I agree.
The lips are very sensitive and can detect subtle difference in temperature. When my son has a flare up of eczema spots on his face near his chin, I have noticed on more than one occasion that when I happen to kiss it, it feels warmer than the rest of his face. Some people feel the forehead with their hand to see if the person has a temperature, but the hand is much less accurate. The skin on the hand is used to all sorts of abuse and has much thicker than the lips...
