Spina Bifida

hermy by hermy Talking Back(August 2007) (rank 46th)

                           Spina Bifida is a birth defect where the spinal cord or its’ coverings have not completely developed. Spina Bifida occurs before birth, usually in the first month of development, it can be treated as soon as

the baby is born.

                           There are two forms of Spina Bifida, these are;

          Spina Bifida Occulta – this is the mildest form. Children with this type of Spina Bifida usually do not suffer any health problems but they may have a birth mark, patch of hair or dimple on the skin over the lower spine. This type of Spina Bifida  often goes unnoticed.

         Spina Bifida Manifesta – this includes two types of Spina Bifida, Meningocele and Myolomeningocele.

                 Meningocele – involves the membranes that are responsible for covering and protecting the brain and spinal cord. These children will have a sac filled with fluid, which is visible on their back.

                Myolomeningocele – is the most severe form of Spina Bifida. Most babies who suffer this type of Spina Bifida will also suffer Hydrocephalus ( see previous article). Because of the abnormal development of and damage to the spinal cord a child who has this type of spina bifida will have some form of paralysis. These babies will also have a sac that bulges from the back, but skin may not always cover it. In some cases, the nerves of the spinal cord may be exposed.

                          Treatment for Spina Bifida Manifesta includes the child having surgery within a few days of being born. Children with Spina Bifida will often need the use of crutches, walking frames or wheel chairs, or they may need to wear leg braces. Parents with children with Spina Bifida will receive support from a medical team that may include several Doctors. This will be to achieve a life style for the child in which the disability interferes as little as possible.

                         Depending on the severity of the disability, in most cases the child will be able to grow up and live an independent adult life.

                         Some practical advice in reducing the chances of having a child with Spina Bifida are; Taking a folic acid supplement from one month prior to conception through till the end of the 12th week in your pregnancy

           Recommended doze to take;

n      400mcg supplement everyday

n      200mcg folic acid in your dietary intake everyday

Some foods that contain folic acid;

n      Fortified breakfast cereals

n      Baked beans

n      Green leafy vegetables

n      Peas

n      Orange juice

                            I hope this helps…………….

Re: Spina Bifida
my hubby is living proof of it.......he was surfing at the age of 17 and got a really sore back.....that was the first time he noticed anything wrong with his back......like you do at the age he did nothing........he continued to play all his sports and just learned to live with the pain.......as he got older he decided to have it checked........he then fund out that one of his lowest vertebras on his spine had not finished joining..........he has never let it affect his life too much, but he does suffer quite a bit of pain at times.........he has the hair patch on the site on his lower spine........thank you for your comment Jo.......regards Sandra xxx
