Numeracy Development - Addition and Subtraction
Version B – for children aged 8 – 13. Version A is for 3 - 8 year olds.
This is a pencil and paper game; however you can modify it to an active game as in Version A if you wish.
Get hold of two dice, different colours. Nominate one dice the ‘plus’ dice and the other the ‘minus’ dice. Rule a line on a piece of paper. Put 17 equally spaced marks down it and number from -8 to +8. Should look like this on a line:

Use one counter for each child, or have the children put his or her initials on the spot where they are. (This works well if you can laminate the paper and use textas so you can rub it off.)
Everyone starts on zero. Roll both dice, and move up the number on the plus dice and the down the number on the minus dice. For example, if +3 and -4 are rolled the move would be 0 (+3) to 3 then 3 (-4) to -1. Then the next child rolls and has his/ her turn.
The game is won when one player makes it above 8 or below -8. Then play again! One child can play by trying to win with the shortest number of rolls possible.
Hopefully the kids should have fun; you can incorporate prizes if you wish. Usually stays fun for 10 or 15 minutes, so don’t push it past its limit or they won’t want to play again. When they get good at it you can roll both dice at the same time and they can take short cuts. For example, if they roll +4 and -3 they can just move +1.
