Babbling- When babies first start to communicate, babbling is what they first use. This is their way of trying to repeat and copy what adults or other older children say.
It is believed by scientists Kuhl and Meltzoff (from the Talaris Research Institute) that baby’s babble because they
are learning to use their lips, mouth, tongue and jaws to try and create words. The scientists also believe that the baby isn’t simply creating random sounds strung together in an unbearably cute way.
Babies learn to speak from the way adults talk to them.
There is a language called ‘Parentese’. However we know this as ‘baby talk’. This is supposedly the best way to talk to babies because of the pitch and long drawn out vowels that is required. You are also required to get up close to the baby when using this language.
An example of parentese is saying in a high pitched voice, ‘Can you give me a smiiile? Give me a big, big smiiile!’
Ways to support this form of language development are to speak baby talk and focus on single words.
