Rotarix/Rotavirus Oral Vaccine

ellamia by ellamia Talking Back(September 2007) (rank 51st)
Hi

I would just like to say before you get your child vacinated at 2 months for to Rotarix (to stop gastro) please research into this vaccine as the doctors dont tell you alot about it. Personally i was very un happy with the results i found on the
internet and also what it has done to my baby, her poos are really smelly and discusting. They told me at the surgery if anyone had cancer they couldnt change babies nappies. I think this vaccine is to get less people in hospital which is great but it is just another drug to give them. I have a link for you to read up on but theres heaps of info out there. Please do look at all side effects. Now the link is saying it can effect their bowls later on in life which is quite a worry. I am not saying to go against it im giving my personal oppionon and some vital info. Anyway heres the link.

Re: Rotarix/Rotavirus Oral Vaccine

The Rota vaccines were added to the free vaccination list here in Australia for babies born after May 2007.  My baby was born in March 2007 so we had to pay the $400 for her to have the vaccine (three doses).  We were advised to have our baby vaccinated against Rota by our paediatrician, one of the top three paediatricians in the state.  I don't believe that a professional would advise something they persoanlly felt was not important for, or a danger to, their patient.  When in doubt, or if anyone has any question call the vaccination info service, of ask your paediatrician.  You need to know facts and get professional advice about your childrens health and safety, not simply decide you don't like certain side effects, or believe non-professional advice.

WRONG INFO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dear Kelly, Thanks for sharing your worries with other moms, HOWEVER please next time ATTENT to confirm if you are having a CORRECT info in order to avoid the spread of wrong ones. This can be a misservice to the population, especially when is related to health. The link you gave was written in 2001, and is about ANOTHER rotavirus vaccination that has been suspended in US due to those cited side effects. Rotarix, and also Rotateq, are 2 brand new vaccinations available since 2004, widely studied and tested in several countries, that is reccommended by the World Health Organization, APA, and other serious health associations. Those problems cited in the article have been not related to these new 2 vaccines. Please research more about them, before making your mind, and others peoples mind.

Re: WRONG INFO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all, Kelly was explaining what happened to her child after having the vaccination. She is stating that she was not happy with the information she got from her doctor. She says that the link is only one of lots of information out there. And she says to research into it before vaccinating, like a lot of people do.

Thanks for giving the other information about the new vaccines. You could however lower the tone of your writing.

Re: Rotarix/Rotavirus Oral Vaccine

Both my children have had the Rotarix Vaccine.  Now I would just like to tell you why:

  1. The Rotavirus can be extremely severe often leading to hospitalisation for the child - I was recently hospitalised with Gastro and it was extremely painful and I was extremely sick - no way I am going to put my child through this - if I can help minimise the risk of this happening to them then I will.
  2. Peer reviewed research and reports (this is the only style of research to be trusted) advocate the use of the vaccine
  3. The government would not have put the vaccine on the immunisation schedule to just "get people out of the hospital system" there are many vaccinations on the market that are not on the schedule - only a select few are deemed to be so important - if they were just trying to decrease the pressure on the hospitals it would probably put the flu vaccine on the schedule and make it compulsory
  4. The rotarix is highly infectious and if my children managed to get it and I had chosen not to vaccinate them and then another child who contracted it from them ended up in hospital then I don't think I could forgive myself.

I just want to urge you all before you decide whether or not to immunise your child for the rotavirus please not only research the vaccines on the internet but also ask your doctor and if you are not happy with their explaination ask another doctor. (I am NOT a doctor just someone who believes in vaccinations)  After all - everything has side effects - it's interesting this brings up such debate - believe it or not you can get Blood Disorders from taking Panadol (a rare side effect see: http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/public-health/psb/chronic_pain/pf_faq5.html) but are you not going to take it next time you have a headache or fever or give it to your child.

Re: Rotarix/Rotavirus Oral Vaccine
Thanks for the info Kell - I had never actually thought about this vaccine or had it offered for either of my boys. I think I would give it a miss personally after reading the info in the links and hearing about you bubs side effects.

Re: Rotarix/Rotavirus Oral Vaccine
i do think its coming to a point where we are overvaccinating to a point where we are doing it at the detriment of our kids, sum things we just need to build up a resistance from having them thats what immune systems are for after all. great advice

Re: Rotarix/Rotavirus Oral Vaccine
Thats true but i totally disagree with this vaccine its a ploy to get people out of the hospital system and can be dangeous for your child id prefer my child being safe from having it. They can recover if they do get gastro they cant recover if they have a bowel problem.

Re: Rotarix/Rotavirus Oral Vaccine
Hi
Not a common one for Australia
Jalan has to get every vaccine available because of her compromised immune system
This is not one we have been offered.
I would rather vaccinate and protect even with the side effects that CAN happen as the alternative is far scarier
Ever wondered why we don't get a lot if things we got as kids...mumps measles polio etc....because most have been eradicated by vaccinations.
Some are slowly coming back because parents choose not to vaccinate.  If you have ever seen a child who has not been vaccinated get something it is often pretty severe sometimes fatal.
I know some children for medical reasons cannot have vaccinations and for other personal reasons but i chose the safest route overall for my child after research
What ever you want to find on the internet now both for and against something you will...
Just like everything There are always two sides to the story.
Great link though

Re: Rotarix/Rotavirus Oral Vaccine

hi kelly,

my bub had opposite reaction he was blocked up for 2 and a half weeks after having it, before which he went every day! i too did some research and came to the same conclusion, that it was just another government ploy to ease the pressure on hospitals! and in all my years in the health industry i was always taught that any tummy bugs should be allowed to run their course so as to rid the stomach, intestines etc of the bug, this vaccine seems to contradict that theory, i can tell you this though my bub wont be having the second installment!

Re: Rotarix/Rotavirus Oral Vaccine
Here is a link to the information about the vaccine that is given in Australia.  I am guessing the reason that people with cancer (or anything that may constitute them having a low immune system), are recommended not to change babies nappies is because babies can still excrete the live virus in their stools for up to 7days.

When we decided to go ahead with the immunisation, we took into consideration that there were quite a few nasty bugs about, and that Jaydee was slightly premmie and might have been more easily affected by a gastro bug.

Re: Rotarix/Rotavirus Oral Vaccine

Hi, Ellamia,

thanks for sharing.  The link you gave directs you to a page that is full of information.  Maybe you could actually link to a page on the vaccine you are speaking of.  Is this one given in Australia?  The webpage is from the US.  And at 2 months, I don't really remember Harrison getting an oral vaccine!
