Foods to try and avoid while Breastfeeding - Edited

ellamia by ellamia Talking Back(September 2007) (rank 51st)
Theres no scientific evidence that some foods/drinks can cause baby to be in discomfort with wind. However you may of course try these foods or drinks after the baby is 6 weeks old they suggest and if they have effect.

The foods/drinks suggested to avoid:

  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Brussel sprouts
  • Peas
  • Cucumber
  • Capsicum
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Radishes
  • Cauliflower
  • Lentils
  • Raw onion

Strong herbs and spices. (Cayenne, chili, oregano, thyme, marjoram, sage, rosemary)

  • Brewers yeast
  • Tea
  • Coffee
  • Chocolate
  • Alcohol
  • foods in high C concentrate
  • Mangoes
  • Berries
  • Melons
  • Grapes
  • Oranges
  • Lemons
  • Stone fruits
  • Pineapple
  • Strawberries
These are the main ones of course there maybe other foods that i havent listed. It is said that in high C concentrate such as oranges or pineapple juice it can cause baby to have a nappy rash.

Moderate caffeine intake is fine too longs if it is a small amount as it can make babys sleep affected or make them irratable. Things containing caffeine are things like Tea, Coffee and some soft drinks etc.

I have tried without some of these foods/drinks and it has helped me Immensley and i hope this helps someone else.

Thanks Kelly

Great advice Kell! i had to avoid some of these things while I bf my oldest - onion, garlic, hotdogs, spinach, spicy food, cabbage and peas (probably more too) and when he was around 6 months I slowly introduced these things into my diet. With number 2 I can eat anything and it doesn't bother him - funny how different babies are!

i was never told to avoid anything whilst feeding, only whilst pregnant!

it's too late now!  emily is fast approaching 11 months!

i won't be feeding her for much longer and the last few months i've only been feeding her in the evening/night!

thanks for the article though it may explain a few things!!

lol lisa xxxx.

I could eat most things while breastfeeding.  Not that I ever tried with brussel sprouts yuck! With the coffee, I used to drink coffee in a travel mug while feeding her because I figured that it's going in me then straight into her anyway, but I didn't drink heaps of it.  I couldn't stand the smell of it while pregnant so it's something I had to get used to again afterwards, was quite happy having a cup in the morning and once at around 2:30 or so.  Couldn't get used to brussel sprouts though!  Had to avoid chocolate and nuts.  Thanks for sharing.

Have heard plums are something to avod as well.  I know Harrison didn't respond well when I ate onions.  I am sure there are plenty of others to avoid, could expand a bit.

Might think of altering your title, it sounds like there  are some to try and some to avoid, where I think you are saying foods to avoid while bf.  Just a thought.

Re: Foods to try and avoid while Breastfeeding
I am happy to avoid cabbage, however other than waiting until after feeding to have a coffee, I didn't find that my baby experienced any ill effects from any of the other foods.  He only ever had wind about twice in 13mths of mostly breast feeding, and he never had nappy rash.

I think that if we had experienced problems, it would have been worth trying to exclude some of these foods to see if it helped.
