Scam or Hoax emails

Ngairi by Ngairi Talking Back(September 2007) (rank 57th)

I have noticed recently a lot of emails doing the rounds once again, that are hoaxes. I receive them in my usual email accounts and have seen some posted in here. This is great to be vigilant and to pass on this information. Most of them are a great reminder

of things that we should be doing anyway, but are sometimes too laid back to worry about them.

I know that I have been deceived by these emails as well. It is sometimes very worrying what they contain.

I have found a very useful site, http://www.snopes.com/snopes.asp that you can search for keywords to check if it is a real situation or not. If it is a hoax, it will usually give each version that has gone around and in what year it was first noticed.

Hope this helps someone.

Leisa

Good advice Leisa, and another one I use a lot is www.hoax-slayer.com/

These hoax emails are sometimes based on true events, however they are rarely a factual report... If they didn't sound sensational - then nobody would send them on.  It is a shame that some of these keep filtering through as advice too.

Re: Scam or Hoax emails

Chainmail really annoys me. I've been sent so many stories about passing on emails to raise money, signing petitions, etc; I just delete them on site now. I will pass on some things that pertain to viruses, as ya just never know, better safe than sorry, and I dont' mind gettign funny things like jokes.

Glad to know I can now check the validity of at least some of the nonsense I receive.

I wonder now, how many advice articles and other stuff, that has been posted on Minti has the info originated from a hoax email? I can remember there was something going around Minti a long time ago about setting up a false e-dress in your adress book to catch viruses, that this site you linked says was bollocks. LOL

Thanks.

It's annoying isn't it and i was wondering if the ones that come through your mobile phone...you know, send this to 10 people you know and some thing brilliant will happen in 8 hours....are created by the phone companies so you spend more money on txting!!

Re: Scam or Hoax emails
Great point DA - unfortunately a few have made it through and been posted which is a pain in the proverbial:

1.  Emails aren't in any way or form ORIGINAL advice written by the person posting them.
2.  The majority of them are either proved hoaxes, unsubstantiated, or based loosely on the truth.

As for the scams that come through to our personal emails - I guess it pays to keep updating those boring old email filters.  Passing them on only helps spammers - same as all those so-called petitions and if you are my friend emails...

These hoax emails are a real pain in the butt . .  The only way to stop them is not to forward them on . . .

Thanks for reminding people about snopes

And I just got hit with another one this morning. I think some people have too much free time on their hands, that they can make these up and send them along. LEisa
