Reading. How to teach our children at home before school....

cazza by cazza Young Parent(September 2007) (rank 2nd)

As Parents  we are our childrens first teacher. Babies and toddlers learn a lot at home. Here are some simple things you can do around the house that will help your little ones develop into readers and writers.

Talk, talk, talk!..... LET them express themselves through the adventure of reading.

Your child will learn about spoken words just from listening to you.

Read to your child.

Share books you loved and try some new ones from the library. Reread favorites over and over again!

Point out interesting words as you read.

Help your child understand that the squiggles on the page have meaning.

Talk about books.

Retell exciting stories at the dinner table. Encourage your child to share his/hers favorite parts.

Connect what kids already know to what they hear or read.

This helps your children understand more about the world around them.

Write for a purpose.

As you're writing your grocery list or a thank you note, share your work with your child. Don't be surprised if she/he asks to borrow the pencil.

I have done all these with chloe and it is amazing how well she has learnt from home and the teachers say she is a very well spoken little girl, and are amazed how she can sit there and read a story, maybe not by the words, but by the picture she sees... And in itself is the most inportant way for our Children to learn.....

Hope these ideas have/or will help your little one enjoy reading..........

take care

I'ts amazing the adventures, children can recieve through books. And teaching them the understanding of books...and learning to read...gives them a great stepping stone to the future. Well done Cazza, great advice.

Re: Reading. How to teach our children at home before school....
I love watching my child flick through pages of a book making up the story as she goes.  If it's one she's familiar with, she can recite it as she remembers things well.  People have been fooled into believing she could read! At the age of 2.5 she came to a staff meeting with me and "read" the entire book of Green Eggs And Ham and got all of the words right too and I remember not paying a huge amount of attention to it as I'd seen her do that a thousand times before with all her fave books, but my workmates were dumbfounded that this little 2.5 year old could actually read an entire book like that.  I think there's a lot to be said for reading, talking, and singing with our children.  Well written.

Re: Reading. How to teach our children at home before school....
Its funny my son used to love sitting in bed and reading books to himself, then for some reason he stopped and wanted me to read only - he wouldn't even try! Now we have showtime digital (the satellite tv that you can pause, rewind etc) and he is back into reading his books by himself! :) he knows most of the alphabet and can read simple words with the letters he knows :) I think its very important that a child learn to read before school. I had a reading age of an 11 year old when I was 4. If they are at a good school with special classes they continue to excell.

This is great...
I love reading to emily and getting her to identify the pictures....i also try to get emily to tell her own little stories,
Another good way to tell stories to kids is using puppets and little pictures....encourage them to use their imagination.
Cheers.
