Buying cloth nappies in Australia

Re: Cloth nappy help
Asked by Rachall

Question:

All you cloth nappy lovers and users, can you tell me how you started collecting your stash? Did you get the nappies one-at-a-time or did you go out and buy a whole heap of different kinds

and brabds? Also did you buy them brand new or second hand first? I am wanting to actually start my stash  and I am lost as to how to go about it. It all seems so daunting to me.

My Advice:

I started out using cloth flats with my eldest daughter and then again with my last baby at 8 months. I had 8 flats and 2 wool soakers which I made myself.  I then bought a few trial packs.nurturenappies had a good trial pack at the time with a bamboo flat, fitted, pocket, AIO and wool cover and a few other cloth accessories which was great when I was new to cloth. I also bought a trial pack from Baby Beehinds and Green Kids.  This gave me an idea of what I would like to use. I preferred fitteds with wool soakers I made myself.

I have bought a few second hand nappies on forums and swapped also. A good forum is nappiesaustralia where you can freely swap, buy and sell all for free (no listing fees). Or you can have a look at ebay (but avoid the cheap nappies) or buyforbaby

Favourite nappies we use include Pookey Pockets, Bits For Bots, Beetlebums, Whizz Kidz. There are many different nappy retailers that sell a range of different nappy types including flats, fitteds, pockets, AIOs, A12s as well as covers and accessories. Ones I have had experiences buying from include The Wee Wuns, Darlings DownUnder, as well as online malls WAHMania, and oZeBaby. There are also smaller retailers who have stand alone sites such as the ones above and  itti bitti who have great customer service and products.

Its a good idea to slowly build up a stash and see what you prefer and what suits your baby best. Remember that the well known brands have high resale value and can be sold or swapped quite easily if they don't suit you.

There are many nappies available and I can understand it can be very daunting which is why I slowly built up a stash. Now my son is 22 months and we have quite a few different nappies for different situtations. I don't mind using flats around the house. For carers pockets are nice and easy just like disposables. We have mostly Green Kids for that purpose. itti bittis for trimness as my bub has skinny legs. But I do prefer fitteds especially bamboo towelling with a wool soaker. For night time we use mostly VBSNs available at The Wee Wuns with wool longies.

I hope that helps and doesn't confuse more.

You may know this already, but Kidspot is really good for second hand cloth nappies and nappy bag accessories. You can find their marketplace listing for nappies here:

modern cloth i've heard is so much better than like 4 or 5 years ago when my youngest was born. I would've used cloth, but i didnt' like the cloth back then as they were too big and bulky, and now the cloth modern nappies look like the disposable ones.

Doesn't confuse anyone?? It's like listening to my teenagers talk!! LOL When I was going through it all there were towelling ones and disposables. That was all I knew about. Maybe a flannalette one here and there. The rest of it...now I know what my sis is talking about when she talks about nappies for her little one. Thanks. Leisa

I love modern cloth! I'm almost wanting to have another bub just to use pocket nappies! Have you seen the animal ones? I've fallen in love with the pig one.  Modern cloth is just as easy as disposable but works out far better on the environment and you don't even need to soak them! Less money in the long-run.  Tree hugging greenie here can you tell?

Disposable clothing?
Sometimes I am tempted! Washing cloth nappies is easier for me than taking out the rubbish 2 times a day. (I know lazy me)
