What is "GORD"?????

janicepovey by janicepovey Talking Back(September 2007) (rank 34th)

"What is GORD"

Many people experience heartburn, indigestion, acidic taste in the mouth and stomach upsets every now and then.  However, if  you suffer from these symptoms more than once a week,

you may have  GORD   ( Gastroesophageal  Reflux  Disease )

GORD is a condition where acid from your stomach flows back up into your oesophagus  ( the tube that takes food from your mouth to the stomach )   GORD is a very common condition, they say it is estimated that about 20% of all Australiams have symptoms of reflux at least occasionally.   But there is a small percentage of people who suffer, from a more serious form of this  disease, called,  ("Zollinger- Ellison Syndrome" )  though this is a rare condition, where the stomach produces very large amounts of acid,, much more than in ulcers and reflux.

To help digestion, strong acids in your stomach break the food down. Your stomach wall is coated with thick mucous to protect it from these highly corrosive acids.  Your oesophagus, on the other hand, has a delicate mucous lining.   A muscle called the "Lower Oesophageal Sphincter" connects your oesophagus with your stomach.  In normal digestion, the sphincter muscle opens to allow food to pass into your stomach,  then quickly closes.

If the sphincter muscle opens when it shouldn't, stomach acid can flow back up into your oesophagus.  When acid flows back up onto the oesophagus it can cause a burning sensation which is commonly called "heartburn".

"What causes GORD???"

Many things can cause GORD.

The most common are;

Diet

Eating large meals

being overweight

Smoking and alcohol use

certain medications

Pregnancy

"Most common symptoms of GORD"

Heartburn This is  most common symptom of GORD. It usually feels like a burning sensation in your chest and can rise upwards to your neck and throat.

Regurgitation  Regurgitation  occurs when stomach contents flows back up from the oesophagus into your throat, so food repeats itself in your mouth.

Acid Indigestion Occurs when stomach acids reach the throat, resulting in a sour or acidic taste in the mouth.

If you suffer with any of these symptoms, more than a few times per week, it would be advisable to see your G.P.

Its horrible to live with but medication if you get the one thats suited to you, works wonders. Re: What is "GORD"?????
Hi Janice,

GORD is what my baby girl has . . .  It is so much more than heart burn and reflux. It is pure hell - she can scream for hours at  a time and there is nothing much we can do to help her. She is at high risk of Dental Decay and long term stomach and throat conditions. If not cared for properly she may also develop major bowel problems and with every bowel motion we must check for blood as this is the first sign of bowel problems.

Once she chocked in her sleep and we nearly lost her, now she regurgitates almost every night and we must put her to sleep sitting upright as this lessons the risk of her choking and also helps with the pain . .

THANKS so much for doing and article on this . .  I have tried several times but I always tend to get carried away.

Cheers Kellz

Re: What is

So sorry Kellz, that your daughter suffers so badly from GORD...it is very painful....i'm sure some of these cases you hear about screaming babies, for long periods....is a form of GORD and not colic.  I don't know what your doctors have said to you.....but by what your saying.....it does sound to me like she might be in that small percentage of cases, who have the serious form of " Zollinger- Ellison Syndrome". If she is in that high risk....of dental decay, and long term stomach & throat problems...does sound like the more serious side of GORD.

You don't say what medication she is on, if any? My doctor tried me on a few, that didnt work...now i'm on a fairly new one called "Somac" 20mg......which seems to be doing to trick. I sincerely hope, you can get something to relieve the poor little ones, pain & suffering.

Love Janice xxxx

Re: What is
Hi Janice,

Yes my little one is on Losec 20mg, plus a prescription formula. It is certainly a long hard road and I am part of a support group for mums with kids with GORD  which is called RISA.

I have never heard of Zollinger - Ellison Syndrome but intend to check it out . . .

Cheers Kellz
