Jumpstart transition to kindergarten

mummycristlyn by mummycristlyn Talking(September 2007) (rank 123rd)

My first born is of to kindergarten next year and i have mixed feeling about  it all  every thing is going through my head  like will he be ok and how will he do   is the school a good school because we have not long moved to the

area now i have come across this jumpstart transition to kindergarten  and what they do is get the kids to come to the school once a week for 1 1/2 hours for 10 weeks and they get to know the other kids so they don't feel alone  and they get a feel of what kindergarten is going to be like  i think its a great idea because my little boy said i don't know anyone that's going to the school and he loves going   because they do all sorts of fun activity and they work with the kids that have difficulty's with fine and gross motor skills witch i think is great because my son has a lot of fine and gross motor skills difficulty's  they get to have free choice activities like

*Cooking face biscuits - icing and lollies

*Finger painting

*Outdoor activities playing with hula hoops balls etc.

And they do other activities such as singing and playing with the musical instruments crafts learning how to write there name and they get to go and  practices how to order from the canteen  the school gets there health nurse to come and talk to the parents if they have any concerns about   child's  speech, sight, hearing and they make sure that  ur child's immunisation is up to date  they have a curriculum-literacy groups and a curriculum- numeracy groups i think it is fantastic and then at the end of the program they have presentation and performance this jumpstart transition for kindergarten has made me and my husband more at ease with sending our first child to big school because its such a big step for all of us  but i don't think his going to be the one crying at the  gate  i think its going be me he was  once a tiny little baby and he is just so big if you have a little one that's of to big school next year u should see if they do have a jumpstart program its great

Re: Jumpstart transition to kindergarten
My third will be going next year. As she is starting school at 6 years old. I kept my older two children home untill they started school i went to kinder and just did the things they do there at home. I wanted to spend as much time as i could with them & am proud of the fact that they had home schooling before school. My older two children could count write words and numbers and say the whole alphabet. I am teaching my third who has just turned four how to write and count now.

Re: Jumpstart transition to kindergarten
We had a similar thing here, and the high school also runs a Week of Excellence in June where the kids coming to the high school get to participate in hands on classes of their choices. They meet the senior leaders of the school that will be their buddies (Year 12's and Year 8's have buddies to help with the whole transition thing). The primary also have a buddy system between the Year 7 & Yr 1 and Yr 6 and Preppies. It works really well. Leisa

Re: Jumpstart transition to kindergarten

My son's school has a Pre-School attached and the year before they start school they can go along to either the morning or afternoon session, they get to know the teachers, the school, and the the other kid's already there and the one's they will be going to school with. I think it's a great idea...!!!!

Re: Jumpstart transition to kindergarten
This is a great article, and these programs you have wrote about are great, and my 2 oldest have being there and done that, and chloe is to go and do it this term after our school holidays..

And i would highly recommend it to any parent, as i experienced with my 2 older ones, it was me with the tears on the day not the kids....

You will be ok, and hope that we can be there for you when the time comes on here...

take care
love cazza
