Explaining to your child you are going to have day surgery

emmie by emmie Talking Back(September 2007) (rank 31st)

This is something i had to explain to my 4 year old step daughter as i was going to have day surgery having 2 small operations and she wanted to know :

Mummy why cant i come to the hospital with you ?

I said to her that

they were going to make mummy better and to be able to do that mummy has to have this special mask on and also a little needle in my hand and mummy will have an hours nap and you dont want to see mummy have a needle that by the way does not hurt mummy and you cant be there if mummy is sleeping who will look after you and mummy has to make sure that you are safe.

Why do you have to have a operation?

I said to her you know that mummy has been sick and mummys tummy has been hurting lots , she said yes so then i went on to tell her well when mummy wakes up she will be a little bit sore and tender for a few days but if they find the problem mummy will feel much better but while mummy is sore and tender mummy will also need rest and for you to be a good girl and look after your little sister and daddy will look after you but you dont have to orry about mummy mummy will be fine i promise.

Can you play with me when you get hoime?

I said no when mummy gets home mummy will stll be very tired and will want to go to bed and you must allow mummy to do this nd be a good girl for daddy and even when mummy gets up mummy wont be able to play with you as she will be sore but this will only be for a couple of days but daddy , chloe and grampy will play with you.

How long will you be sore for?

I said mummy will be sore for 3/4 days but after then mummy will play with you lots for the days we missed and then we could even go for a walk if you like .

cheers,

i hope this elps someone in a simular position

luv emz xx

Re: Explaining to your child you are going to have day surgery
I had to explain similar to my kids when I went to hospital a few years ago for 'girly bits repair'. They understood, and had to explain to my then 3 yr old that I would be staying there for a couple of nights. He was happy with this and came to see me while I was in there. Then we I had to have day surgery a few weeks ago, he asked if it was for my girly bits and I said yes. He told me not to worry that he would take care of me after.  Having a house full of boys that don't want to discuss what a girl has, does have its advantages. But very well explained toyour stepdaughter.

I had to do this with my 2 when I had emergancy op for my Gallbladder and then again sor a simillar one to what you had. It was hard for them to understand what was happening, but they were good. they were so careful with me and got me drinks of water and sandwhiches ect....

great advice there emz

Re: Explaining to your child you are going to have day surgery
That's great - it is enough information to help them understand the importance of the situation and why they can't come without scaring them.  I really like that you said if Mummy asleep - who will look after you?  Logical and easy for even a younger child to understand - a dash of truth and no silly lies.

Well done - Luv Lui

Re: Explaining to your child you are going to have day surgery

yes i thought it was very important she wasnt scared and at the same time understand why she couldent come , she knows at all times somebody looks after her which is why i questioned her to who would look after her while i was sleeping , i dont lie to my kids everything theyu hear from me are the truth best way i say

cheers babe

love emz xx
