Anyone For Scouts?

jenaya04 by jenaya04 Talking(September 2007) (rank 500+)

HI everyone..I hope you are all well!

So your 11-14yr old is not a footy player and has no interest in slam dunking the basketball. They  have tried Karate for self defence, hoping it to be a self esteem building sport but they lost interest after a few weeks. Mmm, what about tennis? Well no, that one is certainly not up his alley. You really believe that your child should be involved in some type of out of school activity but they show no interest. Maybe its not so bad them sitting behind the computer all day huh?..I mean what about Bill Gates..he is a millionaire...Im sure his career began behind a computer..so why not my child??

Then came the day when my son saw an ad on the television advertising for scouts. His eyes lit up and he says "mum, I want to try that". Well, why not I thought. Isn't scouts all about survival techniques?..that could be useful. After a few phone calls, my son was all ready to join the nearest scout group. My husband was hesitant and said "he isn't going to like that..it's not what you would call cool these days!" Regardless, we let Jordan decide when he went to his first group meeting the following wednesday evening.

Upon picking Jordan up, he was so excitied and couldn't get his words out quick enough about what they had done that night. He was even happpier that the old kahki brown shirt is no longer the unifom but instead a blue polo shirt. It appeared times have changed and scouts have moved with it. He explained to me that he will recieve badges for each task that he accomplishes. The tasks are outlined in his book he was given when he joined. They range from knots to cooking on camping stoves to first-aid. There are many activities the scouts do such as rock climbing and mountain bike riding, water sport, camping and caving. Although some of these activities make me want to start chewing my nails, he seems enthusiastic and can't wait for his first scout camp next week. He is even looking into the future as there is an Australia wide camp called the Jamborie which will be held in Sydney in 2009. Scouts come together from all over Australia for a week of action packed adventures. As a scout, you belong in a troop with a group of other kids around the same age. There is a scout in charge called the Patrol Leader and there could also be an assistant to the Patrol Leader. These are the people that test the scouts on their skills and decide if they have completed it. It's actually quite technical and gets a bit confusing with all of the levels the kids aim for but Im sure you can get my drift. Basically, It's all about confidence building, repect, consideration and aiming to acheive while working together.

Jordan loves the feeling of belonging in a team with other boys and girls who have also said that they tried other sports but just didn't feel that they fit in. Everyone is equal..noone is better than another...it's all about acceptance which is something my son has sorely been lacking.

So if you are like me and have encouraged your child to try different activities but to no avail..then why not introduce scouts? Something like this could be right up your childs alley!!!

Zane is 7 and has been doing Joeys this year. He seems to enjoy it so far, his mates go so that probably helps.  Your right it doesn't seem very 'cool' but i think the little kids get a kick out of it.  He does seem more confident this year - hard so say whether it's just him growing up or if Joeys has helped.

Re: Anyone For Scouts?
I was in the Girl Guide Association from Brownie Guides to Rangers, even Guide Leader and District Leader. I also was a Cub Leader and a Rover in the Scouts. I would have loved my kids to join up but they refused point blank, and I had always promised that I would never force my kids to do something like that if they didn't want to.
As a member of the organisation, I was also a part of Brisbane Gang Show, and also got a chance to participate and perform in an Australian Gang Show in Sydney and Melbourne in 1988. We performed at the World Jamboree in Sydney, performed at the Myer Music Bowl in Melb. I still have a few friends around the world from that experience. It was the best years of my life (before kids). One of the members of Brisbane Gang Show has her child attending my local high school where the kids go.
I also went to NooraKuNeena which was the Girl Guide equivalent of the Scouting Jamboree.

Re: Anyone For Scouts?

It sounds like between you and me we could get quite a list of guide activities rolling! I wonder how many other guides there are on minti - maybe I should start a group? Would you be interested?

Re: Anyone For Scouts?

How right you are!!!  My ds is not one to mix easily with other kids due to social issues, mainly learning them, processing, and then actually doing the "proper social behavior".  Anyway, I was totally blessed last year in September when I found a scouting group that had some kids with issues shall we say, and he has had the Best Time, learning cooperation, building esteem, and feels proud of  himself....what more could one ask for....however as a single parent, another benefit.......Free Weekends, Free Saturdays as he goes to scouting events, hikes, whatever.  The free weekends are the best, a freedom that I'd not experienced since the day he was born~ I love the fact that he also has contact with adult males because his father is not around...and since he is an only child, he has to learn cooperation and working together in a group to achieve a common goal.

Take care, Simba1

Re: Anyone For Scouts?
My husband loved cubs and scouts and venturers when he was young.  He is looking forward to being a part of it again when our son is old enough.  In some areas now they have started "Joeys" for the 6-8 year olds.  It has been very popular and started for the siblings of the cubs!

Re: Anyone For Scouts?

FYI - Contact info for Guides

Girl Guides Australia (for general infomation) - http://www.guidesaus.org.au/

State organisations - for specific like 'where is my nearest unit?' and 'how do I join?'

New South Wales - www.guidesnsw.org.au

Northern Territory - www.guidesaus.org.au/nt

Queensland - www.guidesqld.org

Tasmania - http://www.guidestas.org.au/

South Australia - www.guidessa.org.au

Victoria - www.guidesvic.org.au

Western Australia -  www.guideswa.org.au

For other countries, do a web search and it should come up quickly. In case you were wondering, Girl Guides and Girl Scouts are the same thing. Which name is it in your country? Guides was started in England by the Baden- Powells. Mrs Juliette Low took the concept to the US and used the name Girl Scouts. So countries historically connected to England are mostly Girl Guides, and those histrocally connected to the US are Girl Scouts.

If you want to know if your country is one of the 145 in the world which has Girl Guides/ Girl Scouts, go to the World Association website.

By the way - the mission statement of Girl Guides Australia - 'Helping girls and young women to grow into confident, self respecting, responsible community members'. Who wouldn't want that for their children?

Re: Anyone For Scouts?
Hi,

Thanks for sharing this . . . I long to get my D involved in Girl Guides or something similar but she shows no interest but i am still working towards it as I think she will learn so much for joining.

These groups are GREAT for building friendships, self esteem and so much more. I wish there were more about them in the communities, as where i live in TAS they are so hard to find.

Cheers Kellz

Re: Anyone For Scouts?

Hi, how are you?

If you email office@guidestas.org.au they will be able to let you know where the nearest Girl Guide unit is to you, when they meet etc. If the night they meet does not suit you, they should be able to find one nearby which can.

If you live out of town, don't have a unit near you or can't attend regular meetings for whatever reason, ask about Lones. Lones is a part of Guide where units are run by correspondance - kind of a School of the Air for Guides!

If you want any more info, just minti mail me! Hope that helps.

Re: Anyone For Scouts?

As a Girl Guide leader, I can't recommend this enough. The non competitive environment in Guides and Scouts is really great. Many of my dearest friends have been made through guides - both as a girl and as a leader. Guides and Scouts in a few states in Australia are in the process of getting the Queen's Guide and Queen's Scout awards recognised on Grade 12 leaving certificates to recognise the calibre of these kids.

The costs of Guides and Scouts is really low too - one of the advantages of having all volunteer leaders. For my girls, it works out to less that $5 per two hour weekly meeting. I challenge you to find another after school activity which is cheaper than that!

If you're interested in Guides or Scouts for your kids, maybe you'd like to be a leader too? It's a great way to be involved in you children's activities.

If you have any questions, minti mail me! Guides and Scouts are great - so be prepared!
