Your Pregnancy Timeline - 5 to 8 weeks

monyq83 by monyq83 Young Parent(September 2007) (rank 9th)

I was thinking about when I was pregnant with my boys, and remembered how much I used to love reading up on my babys development for that particular week. One thing Ive noticed is I cant seem to find a pregnancy timeline anywhere on Minti, so I thought Id do

some research from various sources and make one of my own. I want to make it clear that due to copyright restrictions I have not directly cut and pasted or copied anything from websites or books, but have read it and re-written it in my own wording from what I have learnt. All credits will go to the corresponding websites, books and magazines at the bottom of the page, where I have gotten my information from. If anyone feels that I have breached copyright in any way, please let me know. Cheers, and enjoy your reading!

By now you are probably aware that you are pregnant. You are starting to get what I used to refer to as 'the sniffer dog sense', meaning you have an increased sense of smell. This tends to happen right before the 6 week mark, which is when morning sickness starts. This means that if you smell anything yukky, its off to say your prayers to the porcelain god! I remember my ex partner coming home one day around this part of my pregnancy, and when he walked in and gave me a kiss hello I said, 'you just ate a meat pie and drank a strawberry milk, didnt you.' The look of shock on his face was priceless lol I was spot on.

Morning sickness usually hits hard at around 6 weeks. My advice to you is: "ginger, ginger, ginger!!!' whether it be ginger pills, ginger biscuits, or ginger ale, ginger works wonders for nausea. One thing I learned to do was keep some plain biscuits by the bed, and eat one or two the second I woke up. If I didnt, I would be running for the loo. Some people say sucking on a lolly or chewing gum helped them too.

By about week 7, you will most probably be completely exhausted. This is due to a hormonal surge, and will soon pass. You may also notice that you cut down or completely go off tea and coffee. This could be adding to the tiredness too!

Whatever you do, dont fight the sleepiness. If you want to go down for a  nanna nap for an hour or two, do it! You are pregnant, and can get away with alot more now, let me tell you! If you dont rest when you need to, there is a risk of you passing out and hurting your baby. So make the most of this lazy time while you still can!

Your baby will now measure about 7mm in length, and will be floating around freely dangling by the umbilical cord. It is roughly about the size of a grain of rice in length. How cute!

By week 5, the babys spine and brain have begun to form, and the heart is beating. Over the next 3 weeks, the baby's body will begin to form. The head will come first, closely followed by the chest and abdomen. A basic structure of the skeletal system will begin to develop.

I definitely had the "sniffer dog sense" with my twins that started at about 6 weeks. My husband was painting our hallway at this point but because of my super sense of smell, it had to be delayed for months because I couldn't stand the smell. It was a low odor paint, but it didn't matter.  I didn't have this super sensitivity to smell with my son though.

As far as sleepiness, oh.. yeah, definitely had that with my son. My husband and I would watch a movie in the weekends but I would be asleep by the time the movie starts playing. LOL

Re: Your Pregnancy Timeline - 5 to 8 weeks
Great advice, and so true about coffee! Just last week at work a pregnant workmate asked for coffee when I did a run down to a cafe at lunch time! I mentioned that as much as I love and completely rely on coffee, during pregnancy it was a real no-no, the smell alone was enough to make me sick.  After that, all other workmates who have either been pregnant or are now said they were the same, but for the first 6 weeks it was fine for them to have coffee.  You're right it's probably also why we have little energy until our bodies get used to life without it.  This is great, where was it during my pregnancies?
