UPRIGHT BIRTH

libbylincoln by libbylincoln Talking Back(September 2007) (rank 69th)

UPRIGHT BIRTHS WHY SUCH A GOOD OPTION.....

. GRAVITY,:the babys head and body give your more pressure above the cervix which maks dilation faster.

. UTERUS TILTS FOWARD: if the mother is leaning foward the contractions can happen more effeciently and with less pain.

.No weight in

the major vessels .

.pelvic joints can expand  ad widen.,and give you less back pain.

.in the secod stage the uterus can work at maximum force and in result have a shorter second stage .

when the babys head passes the perineum it will reduce the risk of tearing .

there is less need of pain killers .

gravit will also assist the palcenta from decending faster.

fluids from inside the uterus will drain and reduce the risk of infections .

and if you remain upright in the 3rd stage it can also help with the babys suckling  and the sucking will contract the uterus and reduce blood loss .

Re: UPRIGHT BIRTH

I gave birth to both of my children standing up. For the first, staff desperately tried to get my onto the bed but there was no moving me. For the second they didn't try.

I think that when women are allowed or insist on listening to their body, they naturally find the best way to bring their baby into this world. Sometimes the position of the baby is a great factor. I have also be hearing that alot more hospitals are recommending water births aswell. How lucky are women now. We are finally pulling away from old Henry!

Re: UPRIGHT BIRTH
I tried kneeling on my knees over a mini stool thing and I only managed 2 cm (got to 7 befor the guy turned up to do it man was I pissed) before I asked for an epidural where I had tto lay down for. I was induced and it was my first so I don't know if it makes a differance. Any way good advice. I recommend those that haven't tried it too give it a go next time!

Re: UPRIGHT BIRTH
Makes sense to let gravity do the work.  I've heard the best birthing position is squatting in fresh, running water!  That makes sense too, although personally I gain comfort knowing that in a hospital they are trained to know what to do in the case that something may go wrong and hospitals don't have fresh, running water for birthing purposes lol.  Good article.
