Clipping Finger Nails

Flicka by Flicka Talking(September 2007) (rank 200th)

One major hassle parents often have with their toddlers and young children is clipping their nails.  If nails are clipped from the time baby is first born, it can reduce the stress related to it as Toddlerhood sets in.  Using the baby clippers is the best way to get started.  We still use those.  Tommee Tippee, Dream Baby and Pigeon all have baby nail clippers available.  Some work well, others don't, but it doesn't seem to matter what brand you buy.

When a baby is first born, parents often find it easier to bite the sharp bits of nail off and reduce the self-scratching this way.  However, this can lead to infection if you use your teeth.  Using clippers from this early stage also ensures it won't come as a shock to them later on when you pull out something they've never seen before.  Some of us are lucky and never have problems but some of us have constant hassles with nail clipping.  I've been lucky.

Having a reward in place for a child who sits still while you are clipping their nails often works.  What I do is paint my little girl's nails as a reward.  I only buy the cheap Warehouse nail polish, and it washes off in the bath which is an added bonus.  This can be used on boys too if the boys are young enough to get away with it.  My little girl has a boyfriend who comes into their daycare every couple of weeks with painted nails.  They arrive and leave at roughly the same time, and we have commented to each other about how we can tell it was nail-clipping day that morning.

Other things to try is clipping nails while watching a movie or listening to music, or using other rewards such as a story or a sticker or stamp after it's finished.  Even thought it's only a 3 minute job, it's a job dreaded by many a mum!  I hope someone finds something helpful in this.  Take care.

Great!

Another thing I would add is to keep up with it, because if you want until their nails are really long, they may not be in the mood for you to cut their nails when you are. If you don't wait too long, it will not be a big deal if they are not in the mood when you want to cut their nails.. you can try another time.

Re: Clipping Finger Nails
Some great tips there.  Unfortunately for me, none of them work with my son who is nearly six!!! He totally hates the whole thing.  I still use the baby clippers on him and he still isn't convinced that it won't hurt and this is a smart little guy!!! I just say to him that it's something that has to be done and with long nails they get full of germs and you don't want germs.  That usually works, but my nail clipping job cutting his nails is probably twice as long as the average time taken to get it done.

Oh no you poor thing! Yes some are more stubborn than others lol.  It's usually the smart ones that fight things more, sorry to tell you that.  But you've probably worked that out already hehehe I wish you luck with your nail-clipping in future!

Re: Clipping Finger Nails
When DD1 was little I used to cut her nails with baby scissors while she fed, but as you say, once they're toddlers, restistance sets in. My solution was to get a piece of paper and draw round her hands and feet, then get a selection of sweets (desperate times call for desperate measures - she has eczema so its vital to keep them short) and place one on each drawn digit, and explain that as I replaced each one with a clipped nail, she could eat the chocolate/sweet. As dd1 will do anything for chocolate, it works pretty well. Now she insists Daddy clips her nails as she prefers his clippers to my scissors, even though he will only give her one large choc for each hand or foot! DD2 is less resistant to having her nails cut so far, so we'll see if she will need to be susceptible to the same bribery!

Re: Clipping Finger Nails
When mine were babies I used to clip their nails when they were asleep initially then gradually made it part of their bath routine with the nails still soft from the bath

Re: Clipping Finger Nails

Oh how true with the reward!!!  Dear John just could not sit still, so on went the tv, with lollipop in mouth, and fast clip, sometimes I even got lucky and got all fingers and toes at the same time lol...

Then there were the times when he just would not let me near his fingers, so I gave him an emory board nail file so he could do it on his own, at 11 I don't have to deal with them any more!  Yippie...

Take care, Simba1

Re: Clipping Finger Nails
Good advice Flicka - we used little clippers from the outset, and we have no problems now.  Obviously sitting still for a toddler is a big deal, so we just do one set of little digits at a time.  (Now we need haircut advice - he is looking like the wild man from borneo).
