Private Hospital with Private Obstetrician

ellamia by ellamia Talking Back(September 2007) (rank 51st)
This is for people needing help on where to go to have their baby. This is just a little information on Private hospitals and what they offer.

You get to choose your own doctor and enjoy individual and specialized care throughout your pregnancy and birth. And, of course, a
private hospital usually means a single room, but not always the case sometimes under really busy circumstances you may have to share a room with other people.

If you have your own room there will be no other babies but your own to wake up to. This of course is fantastic. There is also high quality food and excellent service. You will be in good hands and get good treatment just like a public hospital.

Private Hospitals are great I have heard good things and read some good articles. It just depends on where you prefer to give birth. Please research into the right place for you before making a decision.

COST: $1200+ with private healthcare, depending on your health fund, level of coverage and choice of obstetrician.

TIPS: Book in with an obstetrician as soon as you find out you have fallen pregnant as obstetricians are hard to find. The most popular ones are booked out months in advance. Don’t forget to check that he or she hasn’t planned holidays around your due date.

I hope this has helped.

Love Kelly

Re: Private Hospital with Private Obstetrician
This is great info Kell! I went private 2nd time around as the hosp here pays your excess as they make more money out of it. I was in the same hospital & same rooms as with my first (which was public). The only dif was I could choose my doc (I was having a c-section anyway), got a paper everyday, free tv and a better menu! We go private all the time for everything now as it benefits our hosp as well as us.

Re: Private Hospital with Private Obstetrician

if you can afford it I would totally recommend a private hospital.... I would not recommend the hospital I went to or the doctor I had but would still recommend private for sure.

And yes here in Australia you do need to call and book your obstetrician the minute you find out you're pregnant!

Great advice!

Re: Private Hospital with Private Obstetrician

It's interesting to read about how other countries go as far as obstetricians and hospitals.

Here in the U.S., O.B. are very accessible, as do a lot of specialists and more often than not, delivery is done in a private room - I guess unless someone doesn't have insurance.

I've been pretty luck that I have had a private room for both my pregnancies. The last one even had a great dining option. I had a menu of great gourmet food and I could choose what I wanted to eat! Except right before and after my c-section of course.

Re: Private Hospital with Private Obstetrician
I was pretty lucky I think, because our hospital is a major public with a new maternity wing, with all the bells and whistles - situated right next to the private hospital. We had single and double rooms, I was there for a week, and I only had to share my room for two nights.  I got my meals brought to me as Jaydee was on a billi bed, and I raided all the cookies and sandwhiches from the lunchroom for midnight snacks when I had visitors.  I have to say we were thoroughly spoiled by the nurses during our stay  - they were all lovely (except the mean one on the maternity ward that was temping the night I asked to go up to the birthing unit to have the baby).

They also had an excellent specialist clinic for day monitoring, and I was cared for there a few times when I was pregnant, instead of having to be admitted to hospital.  I went to the hospital fortnightly and then weekly, during the pregnancy and mainly saw the same midwives, and Doctors - even the specialists.

After the birth, when I had to have surgery, they paged one of the Doctors from the private hospital next door anyway, for surgery, and anyone from the private hospital would have had to come over to ours for surgery - so it was the best of both worlds.  We also had to go to the private hospital pathology to get tests done on bubs when he was about a week old - it was all free.

t was no accident though, I moved so that I would be within walking distance of the hospital I wanted to be at - so yes, it certainly does pay to do your homework - whether the hospital is public or private.

Re: Private Hospital with Private Obstetrician
Hi
I had a private obstetrician and a private hospital and with all the complications we had I am glad we did.
Megan and Rowan were both born in public hospitals with public everything
The best thing with having a private obstetrician is he listened to me and took into account how i felt.
The public doctors did not take into account my feelings needs or wants. They told me what i had to do and no discussion entered into it.  My birth plan was ignored and everything
My birth plan with Jalan was "hpw much pain relief can i legally have?
I would be happy to have a private obstetrician in a public hospital even
If you can afford it have a private obstetrician makes life a lot easier and a smoother pregnancy and birth
He knows exactly what you want. And works with you
Luv Deb
