Breech Baby

ellamia by ellamia Talking Back(September 2007) (rank 51st)
If your baby is in the breech position, it means that its bottom is lying in the pelvis instead of its head. This occurs in aprox 3-4 per cent of full-term pregnancies. In most cases a breach baby will tern itself before the birth, sometimes as late as week 40. If
your first baby is in the breech position, you may need to have a caesarean section delivery.

This sometimes happens because the baby is small comparing to the amount of amniotic fluid around them or there may not be enough amniotic fluid, as the baby can move a lot as there is somewhat room inside the uterus and they change position quite frequently.

These days there can be ways of turning the baby around. Most of the time the baby will turn around by itself, otherwise a doctor or midwife may manipulate your baby, using a technique called external cephalic version which is done by hand. This sort of technique has been practised for a long time and has been researched to make sure that it is safe. The results of this are very positive and most deliveries are normal.

If this is not sucessful and it still is a breach baby you will be adviced they may be doing a ceasarean section. Which this maybe the best option for you and baby. There is also ways you can try and manouver the baby yourself these are:

  • Lying on your back with your hips just elevated a little bit and your hips and knees flexed. Just roll gently for around 10-15 minutes a couple times a day. If you experience any pain doing this please consult a doctor.
  • There is also a Knee-Chest Position, which you use a pillow to rest your head so that you can maintain this position comfortably. Kneel on the floor with your bottom in the air and your head on the floor, resting your arms. Stay in this knee-chest position for about 10-15 minutes each day.
  • Sleep with several pillows under your bottom and lower back to allow gravity to help to turn the baby for an extended period while you are sleeping.
  • Any activity that involves getting down on hands and knees may encourage the baby to change its position from its bottom-down position.

I hope this information has helped someone.

Love Kelly

Re: Breech Baby
Fantastic advice Kell! Great for people to know. When I was preg the first time my doc sent me for a scan at 35 weeks as he thought I was breech as my tummy was an odd shape - a little bump under the boobs and nothing else - and he said that this was the shape most breech were. We went away the weekend before the scan & I had a lot of movement, then when I had the scan he was in the right position so I think he turned over!

Re: Breech Baby

I had an  ECV done on Piglet.  The big risk with this procedure, is that the cord can get in the way and wrap round bubs neck. If this happens they have to c-section immediately.  Many docs will not even offer an ECV for this reason. It is easier for them to just c-section. The most successfull ECV's I was told are performed during a scan where they can monitor each movement and then break the waters and ease bub into pelvis within minutes. It is not a painfull procedure but very hard work for the docs doing it. Bubs dont always like to be pushed out of their comfortable position.

Best wishes Winnie.x

Re: Breech Baby

awsome advise i was also told a couple more things to help baby move into the proper postion. they are sitting on ur chair with the back rest thing in front of you and also leaning ur arms on a table and bending over a bit while rockin for a while as it will help bubs to move into the right postion. but some babies are just stuborn, as we all know and they will do what they want. great article as always!!! 5 stars from me

Re: Breech Baby

HI there,  my third baby was breech and i ended up having a c-section.  The strange thing was nobody (midwife or dr) detected it until i was 8cm dilated.  The Dr gave me the option of delivering vaginally or c-section, i chose the latter as things had gone on too long and i'd had problems with a fatigued uterus with my first birth.  He had been in the position the whole time and was the biggest of all my babies at 8lb 8oz.

Some other pointers for positioning prior to labour to get baby in optimal postion is to sleep on your left side rather than right, and sit in a chair with knees slightly lower than pelvis and back straight but tilting forward.  On the net if you look up Optimal positions for labour, i think there are some web sites that give pointers.  My midwife told me to look it up but i cannot remember the actual site.

I never thought it would happen to me, wish i had have known more about it at the time....Cheers for the advice.

Re: Breech Baby
I feel this advice is very useful and accurate.  A family member recently had a bubby premmie by c-section as she was in breech.  They couldn't stop labour and had no time to do anything else.  This information will help lots of people with breech-position full-term babies.

Re: Breech Baby
I am a loss to see why this has been voted so averagely - with no comments as well!  I am also at a loss as to why more medical professionals don't know how to perform ECV's, especially when we do have the facilities to monitor mums and bubs to ensure their well being while the procedure is being attempted.

Good advice Kelly, I am sure that some people will find it helpful - cheers, Lui.
