Breast Cancer-Race For a Cure

LisaPetrarca by LisaPetrarca Talking(September 2007) (rank 115th)

I just got back from doing a 5K run/walk ( I just walked, not in running shape yet)  Susan G. Komen Race for the cure breast cancer fund raising event.  My bosses wife was just diagnosed with breast cancer 3 months ago.  She gets her mammograms annually and was fine last year, but cancer showed up this year. She just started chemo and is feeling pretty sick. So we all got together and did the walk this morning at 7:30 a.m. for her.  It was my first time and it was awesome.  There were thousands of people all with their t-shirts on (pink for breast cancer survivors and white for everyone else.  They had bands playing along the route, and cheerleaders cheering everyone on. They had large color pictures of women who had survived and pictures of women who had lost their lives also along the route.  I was amazed at the number of YOUNG women who had lost their lives.  I WANT TO REMIND EVERYONE TO BE SURE AND GET YOUR MAMMOGRAMS ANNUALLY.  As mothers we tend to put our own doctors visits on hold because we are so busy......kids and family first.......us last.  THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER IS THAT EARLY DETECTON IS THE KEY TO SURVIVAL!!!!

Good for you, anything we can do, to bring awareness to early detection, of breast cancer, is a plus.  Or anything we can do to help raise funds, for the cancer association, also.

Cheers Janice

I am not looking forward to the days of mammograms. But it is coming up very quickly. Is it 40 or 50 they now recommend for mammograms? Leisa

The recommended age is 40, unless you have a history of breast cancer in your family, or have had a hysterectomy and are on hormone replacement therapy, then you would definitely need it sooner.  You need to talk to your doctor if this is the case.  Otherwise self exams and yearly doctor exams with your papsmear is fine until you turn 40.
