Attendance for your child and pre school years

cazza by cazza Young Parent(September 2007) (rank 2nd)

In 5 weeks time my chloe will be attending pre- school... so below this is what pre- school means to us and how helping chloe attend these sessions its going to help her when she goes to school next year,,,,

Pre-schools is also known as playgroups or playschools, and is for for young children to learn and play in small groups, and is often close to Your home. So we are very lucky as our pre school is only 5 minute drive away...

Most pre-schools open for sessions of around two and a half hours at a time but some are open for the whole day. And mum or dad get the oppurnity to drop of their child and allow them to interact in a school environment...Some parents choose to stay on and do parent help, but at the the start it may not be a good idea as the teachers/ carers want the child to feel secure, and feel comfortable left by mum or dad...

This Gives your Child the oppurnitys to:

.Learn how to enjoy playing in a class environment and make Friends with the other children,
. Helps your Child acquire the skills of learning and gives them the head start for Big school...

and it helps you as a parent meet other parents and form Friendships as well....

Your child will learn to read, write, concentrate, and learn to sit down on the mat at story times.....

So the way it works here  at our school we start them at 4, and have a 6 week trial for our children to get prepared for school...

Every state is diffrent and every school have diffrent Hours as well,. so i would suggest to contact your local school, and find out theoir requirements and registration days....

When chloe is to go, she will have her own Bag hook, where she will be shown where her bag goes, and she will also be provided with a communication book, so the teacher and i keep up to date on how chloe is progressing at school....

Towards the end of pre school, the teacher will check to make sure that they have all the require forms to have your child attend school the Following year and also  that they have a copy of the childs Birth certificate and immunisation records..

The Clothing Pool- Uniform shop assistant will also come around at the end of the session and show the school uniforms and take orders. and some will allow laybyes so all you need to do is pick up the uniform prior to school starting.......

Hope that you and your child will learn heaps by them attending pre-school. and if you are in doubt and need more answers, dont hesitate to ask the school for more information...

take care

Re: Attendance for your child and pre school years
DD will just be in childcare still next year, but the year after she starts Prep which is where they go the year before Year 1.  The school has a second hand book shop with the text books, encyclopaedias, thesaurus, dictionary, all those things and also has a second hand clothing shop with all the uniforms from children from the year before.  These are first offered to those lower income families, and the thing I like is that they don't just look at gross income, they look at all other expenses too.  Yeah someone might be on a high income but they may also have lots of expenses meaning they don't have enough money to buy uniforms and books.  I haven't decided on a school, but have applied at the 4 I've shortlisted.

Re: Attendance for your child and pre school years

ok and that sounds about normal for schools...

and thats great about the pay system for expenses and down here we can have the principal as i was told by a good friend tonite, have a meeting with them and explain what our expenses are,and if there is fiancial reasons why the school fees are expensive.... But i would rather pay when i can, as i wouldnt like the principal knowing my fiancial situatiion...

Re: Attendance for your child and pre school years
I'm like that too, I'd rather pay for what I can.  But it just means that those who are unable to afford it are not restricted and the children don't have to miss out.  I'm working and have very few expenses so there shouldn't be a problem with it.  When she starts school I will work 5 days a week, but only work school hours so I should be earning a little more than now.  To me it's a matter of pride, not accepting charity but if it came down to whether or not my child got the same chances as other children I would go down that track.

Great advise cazza

We're going to look into getting Zaide into something next year hopefully. I'm really hoping that the primary school just up the road has something.

Re: Attendance for your child and pre school years
Miss Cheeky Chops started a very similar program when she was 2 1/2, the difference being that it is once a week (Friday), for 2 hours and that the parents stay with their child.
When she turns 3 she will go Mon - Thurs for 2 hours by herself and when she turns 4 she will go 8:30 till 2:30, again by herself.
We are in the NT.

Re: Attendance for your child and pre school years
At 2 1/2 it's called kindy.
At 3 it's called kindergarten.
At 4 it's called preschool or pre-transition,and at 5 it's called transition (other states it's called prep)
It is all run at the school I have Miss Cheeky Chops enrolled at. Run by qualified early childhood teachers. It is quite structured but at the same time flexible enough for kids to be kids (especially at this age)

Play group here is run by the local community (or parent voulnteers)  and usually unstructured with free play. More of a social get together for parents and care givers.

Re: Attendance for your child and pre school years
Ok thank you for that info, as it is confusing for some to understand, and i think tasmanai is behind with the times as your state sounds like they have better programs lol...

and i agree with some part of you saying about clicky playgroups, but i think if you can find the right one and its run properly both Child and parent can do so well,...

Re: Attendance for your child and pre school years
My son attended and so does my daughter now, I always get confused at what everyone calls a pre-school, the one my daughter attends is a long day care/pre-school, which is what I thought they all were.... playgroups here are just social interaction..... so your lucky you have something so close, I have to travel 20 min to get to my daughters pre-school....  It is fantastic for getting ready for school, it made my sons transition so much easier on him and on me.  xx

Re: Attendance for your child and pre school years
Its interesting that you say that you are confused,   and thats understandable as when i wrote this today i said that pre school is like playgroup/day care because thats what some states call it..Where in tassie Pre- school is at our local primary school and our playgroup is separate to the school.,,....  Hope i havent confused u more.....

Re: Attendance for your child and pre school years
You've confused me - it is bad enough talking to a friend of mine in NSW where their Kindergarden and Preschool are opposite to QLD. Though we no longer have preschool here, as the kids go into Prep if that is what the parents want. Prep is still not compulsory which I think is bloody ridiculous. And from next year they don't start Year 1 until they are 6 turning 7. Leisa

Re: Attendance for your child and pre school years
Sorry for the confusion, and yes thats the same rule here as well, that the children can go straight to prep as well...

and i have being told tonite as well that our pre school is actually called early intervention, and is in some parts of australia as well....
