7 ways to help your child''s fear of the Dentist,

cazza by cazza Young Parent(September 2007) (rank 2nd)

There are several ways to help calm your child's fears about going back to the dentist:

1. Talk to your child to find out why she/he is afraid of the dentist. Once you know where hers/his fears lie, it can be easier to deal with.

2. Let her watch you. You could sit in the chair and let the hygenist clean your teeth or the dentist count your teeth while your child watches.

3. Schedule a morning appointment. When children are well rested the dental appointment often goes more smoothly.

4. Help your child get comfortable. Let your child sit in your lap on the dental chair for the appointment.

5. Let your child go in alone. If you haven't had luck staying with your child for the dental appointment you may find it helps to let them go into the dentist alone. Some children "act up" more if their parent is present.

6. Consider premedication. Some sensitive children do well with a small dose of Valium given before they come in. They can then be given "laughing gas" during the procedure.

7.Try a pediatric dentist (pedodontist)  have had extra years of training to learn how to help children. Also, because they see only children, their office environment is set up strictly for children.

Most Children will attend the dentist in their baby years- so most dental/clinic sisters would like for you to have your childs teeth looked at 18 months and then 4 years and then follow on every year from primary school at their local school dental place.....

If you require further information look in your local telephone book or contact your clinic sister for more information.

Re: 7 ways to help your child''s fear of the Dentist,
I must admit that I haven't taken any of my kids before preschool age (4). This is probably because they didn't have a problem and also that in QLD we can get free dental services through the school dental van program, and they go in groups to the dentist and also have a few sessions beforehand talking about teeth and what to do.

Re: 7 ways to help your child''s fear of the Dentist,
Hi
Great advice but what about doing one on how to help your fear of the dentist
To this day i still wont go to the dentist until i am dying in pain and nothing else works..eg full pkt panadol disolved into tooth and no longer working type pain.
My younger brother was funny.
As kids we had to go to the school dental clinic and they were for want of a better word...butchers.
One day i had to take my brother who had suffered many a dental clinic horror visit to the hospital dentist.
We got there early and read a few books and played a few calming games.  He was fine
Suddenly his name was called he stood up yelled no and high tailed it out of the surgery to the amusement of every one around.
The nurse came over and said I take it that was Scott...and i said yep...she goes will he come back...my reply  not in this lifetime and promptly exited to find my brother....funniest thing was.......he was 14 at the time.....
His next dental visit was not until he was 28 and the dentist asked do you want the tooth repaired or pulled.
Pulled now with as many as you can get at once cause I'm not coming back.....he was shaking like a leaf
To this day he has not gone back...He is 37 with about 6 rotting teeth left.
As he said they will fall out eventually....
Thank goodness the dental vans are a lot better now.
Luv Deb

Re: 7 ways to help your child''s fear of the Dentist,

Ok thats no good at all, and i would be petrified as well,. but i have no answers on how to overcome fear in adults with dentist, and if i did i sure would do one.. The only solution i could come up with is take your children if you have to go and let them know its all good..

I have a fear of needles. and mick takes mine.. so i could just imagine how scared u are now after that horrible experience....

Re: 7 ways to help your child''s fear of the Dentist,
Great Cazza
My daughter is the one scared of the dentist, however this is due to her once seeing a butcher of a dentist who pulled out a tooth that was obstructing the growth of an adult tooth and he totally stressed her out, we even had to stop at a house down the road and wash her mouth out as she still had blood everywhere. Needless to say we never went back there!!!!!

Re: 7 ways to help your child''s fear of the Dentist,
OMG how horrible and thats sad for your daughter and u as well..

Hope that your sons never have to go through that, and there is more female dentals around now.. and something like what happened to your daughter, well its not surprising there is more females as we would be more gentle.

Hope when she has children that she can overcome all that...

Re: 7 ways to help your child''s fear of the Dentist,
Hi mate,

Great advice . . .  I have always started taking my kids to the dentist at the age of two. There's not much the dentist can do at this age but for me its all about getting them used to the smells etc.

OH and another tip - if your kids need a tooth pulled etc don't let the scaredy egg mummy take them . .  TRUST ME it doesn't help!

Cheers Kellz

Re: 7 ways to help your child''s fear of the Dentist,
HAHA thats no good kellz. and i for one dont mind the dentist, its immunistations i wont sit in on ,.....

so for the mums that are scared of their child having their tooth pulled, maybe it would be a good idea to arrange a time where someone close to your child could go as well.....

Re: 7 ways to help your child''s fear of the Dentist,
i needed this this week!  carter is really afraid of the dentist and we had no success, really, with dentists until we found someone who had a very quiet office and who was willing to tell carter everything before she did anything.  this really worked for us.

Re: 7 ways to help your child''s fear of the Dentist,
thankyou, and if you have a fear its important not to show the kids, and maybe taken some one such as a friend or partner etc with you and have them help you,....

and yes wouldnt it be nice if we had some ones lap to sit on , but we have to be big girls  and be brave hehe,......

and look at this way the children get a brave sticker/good sticker as well... and they are so proud of it....

take care
