Dinner Outing with a Toddler

ellamia by ellamia Talking Back(September 2007) (rank 51st)
Going out to dinner with a toddler can sometimes be quite daunting to even think about so we choose not to go out most of the time. This is because they get cranky and tired and cant really sit still. If you are prepared it is quite possible to go out
to dinner again YAY! Here are a few things;

  • Make sure your toddler has had a sleep or a rest so that they arent cranky for the whole night.
  • If you can talk to your child and it understands have a talk with them and explain your going out to dinner and please be on best behaviour for the night.
  • If toddler is hungry before you leave give them a little snack to just get them through till you have dinner at the resturant.
  • Go to a restuarant that accomodates children, such as has a high chair, pram space and even a little play area if possible.
  • Try to avoid peak hours at a resturant because of the noise and the slow service. Normally around 5-6pm is a good time to go to a resturant just before peek hours start.
  • Take along a bag with essentials such as;
  1. Nappies
  2. Baby wipes or a cloth to wipe the face aswell
  3. Bibs if not take a spare top or clothes if needed changing
  4. Water in their special cup
  5. Snacks if needed
  6. Toys for your toddler to play with that arent going to be in the way of other people of course
  • Try and book the resturant in advance or if not try and choose a spot where there is enough room and less people around for your toddler to disturb.
  • Make sure you use a high chair that they straped in so that your child cant just run around the resturant and maybe run off out of the resturant.
  • Also just remember toddlers get bored quickly and dont have the patience at this age unfortunatly and you may have to eat a fast meal and no appitisers. A buffet is a good idea so that you arent waiting around for food to be served.
  • Please be patient with your toddler and they can get quite cranky but of course this is normal for this age. If you go out alot they will soon learn to be patient and not as bored. The more you do it the more they get used to it.
Good Luck everyone with your dining experiences.

Love Kelly

Re: Dinner Outing with a Toddler
we don't go out for dinner much anymore as its too expensive to do so here. but when we do, we usually go to hogs breath at about 5pm, as not many people are there and so its easier for us.
Emily is usually pretty well behaved though!
Thanks for some great advice!
Cheers

Good points Kell. We go to our local pub for tea about once a fortnight and I always make sure the kids have had a good sleep & we have all our supplies and toys to keep them happy. Jack now prefers to play at the pool table or the computer game but at least he's busy and happy!

Yup sleep is so important!  When John was younger, I would take us out to a pizza place, call ahead so pizza was cooked, we could just sit and eat without waiting.  Also, I'd bring crayons and a color book, when he was a toddler, oh how this helped when we could not pre-order!

Take care, Simba1
