Children, Home Heating & Loss of Moisture!

janicepovey by janicepovey Talking Back(October 2007) (rank 16th)

This advice is something, I grew up with, that my dear Mum, taught me to do.

I grew up in a home, with an open fire, then later on a  slow combustion fire.....which is nice to keep you snug & cosy......but not much good for you.

Open fires, slow combustion fires &  Electric Heaters.........all take the oxygen out of the air.  Which  in  turn, makes your skin dry out....makes you drowsy and also some people have  breathing problems.

My Mum taught us, to put bowls of water, in the rooms where the heat was going.......to replace the moisture, that was lost, because of the heat.

It's amazing, just how much water disappears, from the bowls in a couple of days. Loss of moisture & oxygen is no good for babies, children & adults.

As we live with a slow combustion fire, I still to this day, use bowls of water.

This is just another suggestion....before putting babies, children or yourselves to bed......about 10 minutes before......shut the door.    A cooler room makes for a better environment for a better sleep....than a hot room.

Just thought i'd share this with you.

Kindest Regards Janice

Re: Children, Home Heating & Loss of Moisture!
thanks for that janice...a really good article..i remember when i was a kid and we used a kerosene heater we use to put a bowl of water on top of that...it also helped with the smell of the kerosene.  I dont have an open fire and when i had my own home in perth i got gas ducted heating installed with the vents in the ceiling...i really liked that and am going to do that again when i build another home... ...have a great day..jen

Hey Janice, great article., We don't have open fire etc but we do have central heating, my Dr  told me to do this and also if you have clothing that need drying to put it in the room (just something wet really)  He also stated that humidifiers were not that good.   Very cost effective

Re: Children, Home Heating & Loss of Moisture!

Great article. DD1 has eczema, and Im putting off putting on the central heating this autumn partly coz I know she'll have a flare up once I do.

Bowls of water are a good idea. Or you could grow some houseplants? Not only will they put moisture into the air, but they take in CO2 and put out O2 (the opposite of when we breathe or fires burn). Spot the gardener, eh? Problem is, my houseplants dont put out much moist O2 - I forget to water them at all!

Hi Janice,

What a great article and so very true . .  My grandmother taught me this also. . . I've lived my life this way too. . .
I've also learnt to add some oils to the water like lavender, rose etc and when the kids are a little ill i also add menthol to the water.

Cheers Kellz

Sorry i didn't explain it very well, by putting containers or bowls of water, in the rooms, which are getting the heat from the fire.....just replaces a certain amount of moisture back into the air.....which the heat of the fire takes out. You can place the containers anywhere in the room.

I'm sorry, I don't quite understand what you do with the bowls of water. Do you just leave it in the corner of the room, or do you use it to like, dip in so you can moisten your skin or something?
