JDRF (Juvenile diabetes Research Foundation)

ellamia by ellamia Talking Back(October 2007) (rank 46th)

Id like to tell you a little bit about JDRF (Juvenile diabetes Research Foundation). They have the walk comming up in the next week or so. We do this every year. My husband Shannon Barratt has Juvenile Diabetes.

WHAT IS TYPE 1 DIABETES

Everyone gets this confused

no its not because your fat or what you have eaten this is a chronic disease that destroys the body's ability to produce insulin - a hormone needed to convert food into energy. This is a serious disease and everyday he has to inject himself with insulin 4 times a day. There is a 1 in 12 chance of my husband passing this onto the girls. I am hoping there will be a cure soon. There have been cases of people loosing body parts and all sorts

Insulin will help you stay stabilised but even with this type 1 diabetes can cause long-term health problems like heart disease, blindness, kidney failure and nerve damage. Type 1 diabetes isn’t the same as type 2 diabetes. Type 2 Diabetes is obesity related usually and isn’t insulin based but if not looked after it can be insulin based.

Type 1 Diabetes starts in childhood or early adults, although I recently met someone with type one diabetes diagnosed at 40 years old. This disease can start as early as a infant at 8 weeks of age and can have up to 6 insulin injections a day for the rest of their life just to stay alive.

WHAT CAUSES THIS DISEASE

Your immune system turns on itself by mistake and destroys the beta cells in the pancreas and removes the ability to produce insulin. We need insulin to allow to body to process sugar to make energy.

THE SYMTOMS

This can occur in days or weeks depending on the individual. This can include extreme thirst, needing to use the toilet for urinating and sudden weight loss. These are the most common there are others. If this is untreated and not seen to by a doctor you can go into a coma.

Most people diagnosed with this disease there is no family link unlike the Type 2 diabetes which is family related.

Re: JDRF (Juvenile diabetes Research Foundation)

This is a very good article I knew a little girl from a camp I worked at who was very slim and sadly was born with JD, it was hard for her but at 6 she could already give herself shots in the belly.  I had to take her to have them and just watching her do that to herself was hard but it is how she is able to live.

Re: JDRF (Juvenile diabetes Research Foundation)

My lady and I are supporters of the JDRF. You see, My lady's eldest daughter has type 1 diabetes.

She was diagnosed at 5 years of age, now 16,  she is doing really well. with the awesome support of her diabetes Educator, our GP and our Pediatric Specialist, we have learned to deal with Diabetes and not allow it to run her life.  Her 3 monthly HBA1C tests come back with levels being around average for a normal healthy person.

Diet and exercise, along with a good control of insulin use (as well as adjusting insulin levels when needed) is the main thing you need to concentrate on. A Low GI (Glycemic Index) diet is important here, the lower the GI the more sustained the energy release from the food. This helps keep blood sugar levels constant and helps prevent undue Hyper/Hypo conditions. Keeping in mind the exercise your child gets will also help you to provide the required foods and insulin levels.

Our household has lived according to a Diabetic diet, ever since out daughter was diagnosed.......Would you believe it, I'm fitter and healthier than I ever was, All humans should live on a Diabetic Diet....

Diabetes is often regarded as a curse, but it's really a wake-up call to the human race, to start looking after yourselves better.  Eat better foods, live a longer healthier life.

As a mum of a 7 yr old diabetic I think the more people in general are educated about this condition, the sooner we will find a cure
