A few weeks back l had my blood work done for my pregnancy, all the blood results came back perfect to my happiness apart from the Vitamin D test they now do, while you are pregnant. My Vitamin D level is low, l spend most of my time in the
sun whether l am at home with my pc and my work books, while my youngest sons plays in his sand pit or when l am out and about walking etc. The reason why this has happen is l always have sun protection on, wearing a long sleeve top and the sun is unable to get through and onto my skin. My doctor suggust l share this with friends to let them know how important it is to have Vitamin D in your body whether you are pregnant or not, Vitamin D helps your body prevent alot of medical problems in life.
How do we get Vitamin D?
Vitamin D comes from direct sunlight on your skin; it helps absorb calcium from some foods and drinks. You can get a source of Vitamin D through some foods but not enough to keep your body healthy.
Why is Vitamin D important for pregnancy?
Vitamin D is important for a developing baby; it helps the bone and tooth development. Babies who get a good level of Vitamin D during development also become stronger and develop stronger bones for later in life.
If you think you might have a Vitamin D deficiency?
Go see your doctor and ask for a blood test to be done to check you Vitamin D levels. If you do have low Vitamin D your doctor may suggest taking supplements to help your Vitamin D levels.
Other issues that are related from lack of Vitamin D in pregnancy?
*High risk of Preeclampsia during pregnancy
*Smaller Birth weight babies
*Osteoporosis (in mother and Child – later in life)
*Childhood diabetes
*Asthma (in young children)
*MS
*Rickets (bone disease in young children)
Please don’t forget to play it safe in the sun, remember to always use sun screen and wear a hat and sun glasses.
