Expecting a Baby- Is it safe to Drink?

cazza by cazza Young Parent(October 2007) (rank 2nd)
If you are planning to have fall pregnant or already pregnant below we need to know this info so that our children are born safe and healthy.....

. I am thinking of having a baby, is it safe to drink/ and whats the side effects if i do

No one knows when it is safe to drink, but it is advised not to drink as for some they may not know they are pregnant, and it could harm your baby....

So once you find out that you are pregnant it is not advisable to drink at any one stage in the pregnancy, so when i was told a glass of wine here and there was fine, it is now being said that No alcohol is safe, and i was one lucky mum as i used to have a occassional wine , and my kids were born healthy and fine, but for some its unfortunate thats not the case and bub can be Born with the followingh defects...

.be underweight, and remain small for their age- Now  for some babies are born small, and mum may not have drank, so this is a interesting fact....

. Some babies have problems feeding and settling,- again it can happen to a baby with or without a drinking mum, but for the ones that drink excess of alcohol, it can have a effect on the baby.

Some babies can also have speech problems, and hearing problems  and its amazing how some thing as small of having a couple drinks can cause such a defect in a unborn child.. As i know many children that have this prob, and mum didnt touch a drop....
'

I feel with the following that i have read , that for some this can happen, and its how one can deal with  this area, is how they are going to be in their life...

They say a baby whose mum has drank that the baby  when he/she starts school, may struggle throughout schoo. and also have poor memory and learning problems...

The research also points out for some babys that when they grow up and reach adult life they can struggle as well..

So with what i have read and heard, it amazes me that 1 in every 100 infants can have alcohol effects from mum having a drink, and its worse if mum goes on a Binge drink....

So remember that if you drink one alcohol drink when pregnant,  then you are drinking for 2... As you do when you eat,....

So please remember that  drinking can affect your baby in so many ways,....

take care

Re: Expecting a Baby- Is it safe to Drink?
great article, well done.  I drank a small amount when I was preggers and b4 I knew.  I only knew I was pregnant cause I was so turned off having alcohol.  But it is kind of scarey to know what it can do.

A good article Cazza - we all take risks on a daily basis, however I think we need to be more responsible when it comes to our kids - born or unborn, and if you are aware of the risks, you can reduce them, or eliminate them - cheers, Lui.

Re: Expecting a Baby- Is it safe to Drink?
Great advice.  Don't forget with breastfeeding also there is nothing to say if it's safe or not.  So best to stay away from it until breastfeeding has finished.  A workmate of mine decided not to breastfeed for the reason that she is a heavy drinker and 9 months was long enough for her to be dry.  You just never know.  A beer now and then or a sip for a wedding as mentioned will probably not have adverse effects, but it's better to stay away from it.  Thank you for writing this.

Good advice Cazza.  9 months is a drop in the bucket to save any unwanted side effects.

I was naughty, I did. A glass of red occasionally throughout the pregnancy. With anything I think drinking excessively while pregnant could be a problem, as with smoking drugs overeating etc. Leisa

Re: Expecting a Baby- Is it safe to Drink?

Hi, i personally didn't drink throughout my pregnancies. It's 9 months......9 very important months and by not drinking or smoking etc etc during your pregnancy you know you have given your bubs the best possible start to life.
