Activities to promote drawing skill

mummycristlyn by mummycristlyn Talking(October 2007) (rank 126th)

* Prewriting skills do not have to be developed by sitting at a table and doing writing tasks. Movements is a great way to teach children about shapes.direction and other concepts associated with prewriting. try to keep the movements  large

Encourage  children to use a variety

of materials for drawing

* Thick textas, glitter pens, pencils, paintbrushers and crayons are appropriate

* Provide variation of thickness and length to help with natural emergence of a pencil grasp.

* Vary the gradient of the surface that children write on . Use blackboards, whiteboards or flat surfaces

* Don't forget to include games that don't require a child a child to draw but simulate holding a texta

here are some examples of some  activities that i do at home with my lil man

1. Draw shapes in the sand, children can trace over them with their fingers or with cars, farm animals or other toys  get your child to draw  their own shapes with their fingers or a stick in the wet sand

2. Use shaving cream or finger paint  draw  a shape and  children trace over it with their finger have your child copy this shape

3. Set up roads or tracks in the shape that you targetin  get  your child to drives cars around from a designated starting point to finish

4. When doing specific pencil and paper activities  try to keep your lines thick and bold and keep the activity large

5. Draw a shape on the black/whiteboard and have your child erase the shape in the direction the shape is drawn

6. Make sandpaper shapes so your child can feel thier way around them  with there fingers

i hope you will get some use out these activities me and my son sit down and do them it helps with his fine motor skills

What lovely advice - we are practicing our circles and our J J J for Jayden... He loves different colours, and he loves texters - I wish he would stop eating them though.
