When muscle tone is low . the muscle is relaxed and it will require more active effort befroe movement occours. Children with low muscle tone also tendto have poor joint stablility, resulting in losse or hyper-mobile joints with increased flexibility, weakness and poor co-ordination and control of movements a child with low tone therefore can move a body parteasily bcaouse stretching the muscles meets with little resistance the child will feel floppy and often looks like a rag doll in that they seem to lack postural support children with low muscle tone are prone to sicknessand they have a reduced ability to fight illnesses
SOME ACTIVITIES TO INCREASE MUSCLE TONE AND JOINT STABILTY
row boats : Sit the child facing another put their feet together and hold hands they then push and pullas though there rowing
jumping activities: These can be achieved useing a mattress, tyre tube trampoline, exericise rebounder, elastic jumping , kangaroo hops ,skipping frog jumps etc when a chlid is learning to jump a rebouding surface is good to provide the spring
Climbing activities: Any climbing equipment at preschool , the local park kindygym also scrambling nets poles ladders monkeybars
Wheelbarrows: This activity needs to carried out with care it requires the child to walk forward on his or her hands arms exented out while there legs are held up by anther as with the handles of a wheelbarrow this can be modified to the other person supporting the chlid around the body
my son has suffered from low muscle tone since he was born his condition is not improving but we do all these fun things to help the best we can
