Getting your car prepared for your new arrival...

cazza by cazza Young Parent(October 2007) (rank 10th)
As first time parents it is so important to have your car all fitted correctly with a car restraint so when its time to bring your precious baby home, you know you will be travelling in a safe manner....

Most Hospitals will not allow you to leave the hospital without the proper car seat.... and many would say why,,, Well just imagine trying to hold a  hulking footballer determined to get out of your grip... So thats the amount of effort  required to Hold your baby in the car travelling at 50kms and there was a crash.....

When Purchasing a car seat/capsule make sure that it has the australian standard sticker, and is not older then 10 years.... Also make sure that all buckles,. and accessories to it is in good wear condition.....

When buying a second hand car seat/capsule make sure that it hasnt being in a car crash, and that the sticker is there to see .....

Make sure that when you buy a car seat that its one that is going to suit your lifestyle and car....

Now the safest place for the baby seat/capsule to be placed is in the rear centre end  in the back, Never place the seat in the front of your car....If you have split rear end back seats, seek professional advise....

Whether buying, renting. or Borrowing.  Correct installation and correct use is so critical for your babys safety in the car...

Happy driving and safe Travelling.....

take care

Re: Getting your car prepared for your new arrival...
It is good to remind people to do this BEFORE the birth of their baby.  Most hospitals, or prenatal care clinics will have information about the correct type of restraint, places that they can be hired, or bought.  If it is your first child, it is best to get an approved person to help you fit the baby capsule.

Also, remember that children and babies should not be wearing bulky clothing or blankets when they are put in the seat - they will not be properly restrained.  Place a blanket over the child after you have buckled them in firmly.

Many children are injured because they are not in their restraint firmly, or in the wrong restraint for their size and weight - make sure you read the manufacturers instructions carefully to ensure this doesn't happen to your child.  Check your child's weight and height regularly and purchase or hire the next size of restraint before you need it.

If you are unsure about the correct car safety restraints for children in your country - check with your local automobile association, police or traffic department.

Um yeah - I get a bit carried away on this topic - having worked in the rider/driver training industry...  Don't shoot me Cazza - was meant to compliment your advice.  It is such an important topic, and it makes me so mad when parents don't take it seriously.

Re: Getting your car prepared for your new arrival...
I just saw that - wtf?  I had the same thing the other day for saying thank you... Thanks Cazza, I appreciated your comment... Don't know why anyone would think that car safety for children should be offensive - takes all sorts I guess .

Re: Getting your car prepared for your new arrival...
If you see someone who does not have their baby or child in an approved child restraint at any time - report them to the police.  Tell them the details of where and when, and of course provide the rego, and vehicle details.

The police are meant to take these reports seriously, and follow them up, they need the help of everyone in the community to do this.

Great tips there you can install these car seats yourself but highly recommend a proffesional just to check it out as you can never be too careful when it comes to our babies. Great Advice Cazza,

Love Kell
