Encouraging Children to Draw & Paint |

Children love to draw, this can be making a scribble or making marks on paper and this is how children learn to draw. They start to copy objects such as animals, houses, trees and shapes that are easy. By drawing and painting they are delvoping their imagination skills, shape, colour, sizes
and also developing control of using their fingers and hands.
When children first start making a making on a page or scribbling can be around the 12 month of age mark. They do however try to eat the crayons so please keep an eye on them although most crayons for kids arent toxic, I wouldnt suggest allowing them to eat them. They also hold the crayon like a knife or a dagger of some sort this will develop into a proper way to hold the crayon later on.
When a child is around 2 or maybe younger or older they will start doing strokes on a paper. They will do cirular, up, down and across strokes. There should be less scribbling and more lines. Remember they are still learning and what did our parents always say "practice makes perfect."
When a child is around 3 or more they decide which hand they prefer to draw with so this may determine whether they are left or right handed. You may already know this by other actions they do with their hands or legs already. They begin to start holding a pencil or paintbrush or even a crayon properly using their fingers rather than their palms. Later on your childs drawings or paintings may start to look like something rather than scribble or lines. You might see trees, your family or even a house. You might not neccesarily make out what the picture is but soon enough you will. As the child gets older they hold a pencil, crayon or a paintbrush properly and have a better grib and soon they will be coping numeral and letter shapes.
Painting & Drawing is a special time for yourself and your child just like reading. This is a developmental skill that will be used in your life in school or after school finishes. This is a great learning skill and quite fun to do and watch your child develop.
Happy drawing and painting with your children.
